Leaf Rumours

I think the thing that we have to recognize with the Kubina trade is that was simply the best the Leafs were going to do for him.

Let's not forget that on deadline day 2008 Fletcher agreed to trade him for Kyle McLaren... and his $3mn contract.
Rumours get stated as facts around here a little too often. Do you have documented proof that this deal was (a) something Fletcher was definitely interested in, and (b) the only offer on the table?

He's hurt. He's a UFA at the end of they year. He was another salary dump the Leafs took on to dump a legit #1 defenseman.

Van Ryn was a very good player and he was clearly capable of giving us the lion's share of what McCabe gives you nowadays, except for half the price.

It was a good trade that didn't work out because of an injury, sort of like the Nolan one.

Not a salary dump. Kubina was a salary dump.

And truth be told, where we sit right now, I'd rather have MVR and his expiring contract than McCabe's continuing contract heading into next year.

That's really all it was about in the first place.

From Ek and Stajan

Add Calgary and Colorado (presumably as part of a package for Svatos) to the mix on my Chart now. Phoenix and St Louis are still in the game.

St.Louis may want to rip us off again and offer crap.
Svatos has often been linked as being liked by the leafs. I would sell "veteran" leadership in Mayers plus Stajan for Svatos

Are you kidding? Svatos is useless. The only reason he's still in the league is that 30-goal season he inexplicably had as a rookie. In the four seasons since then, he's been pathetic offensively. Hell, this season, Jeff Finger has as many points as him....in six fewer games!!

Anyways, if we do deal Stajan to anybody, it had better not be for a middling veteran forward, or for a second round pick. He's been one of our few useful forwards this year, and if we're going to give him up, it had better be for a legitimate prospect or a 1st round draft pick.

But... but... players aren't allowed to peak when they're 22, can they?

If you are expecting a 1st or good prospect for Matt Stajan the rental player i suggest you bash your head against the wall now rather then on deadline day when you are sure to be colossoly dissapointed

Nah. Stajan will get a good return. He is a good player. He won't get a first, but he'll get something good.

As for Svatos, getting injured every single year he has been in the NHL is what has hurt him. He didn't peak at 22, he is a midget who can handle it.

Man, it will be a big mistake to trade Stajan and Poni for anything less than a 1st. These are two solid contributors, both relatively young, who can help the team going forward.

Trading them off for futures will all but giftwrap the 1st overall to Boston.

Mother****ers.

I won't be disappointed. So far, Burke's demonstrated a tendency to sell off players he doesn't like for pennies on the dollar, and I expect that trend to continue this trade deadline. All I'm saying is what I believe we should get in return for them.

Poni has to go. I think he should bring back a 2nd rounder, or at worst a 3rd or a young guy with a little potential.

Stajan, on the other hand, should stay. However, both of these guys are UFA's and it's the easiest way for Burke to create the illusion that he's being pro-active by making moves to change the personnel on the team.

The Leafs have to have replacements that can step in and score the same as Poni and Stajan or whoever, or we're going to be even worse next year. Trading them for non-1st round picks is fine as long as we have a guy who can score 25 goals and 50-60 points ready to step in next season. I'm not sure we have that.

Little did I know living here in southern CA that the Ducks Cup win would doom our franchise within a few years.

If not for that Cup win, I doubt MLSE would've brought in Burke for this job. He'd have been just some long time GM without a record of true success and best left to run small market teams.

That one Cup win got everyone drunk, making it look like Burke assembled a dynasty from scratch or something, when instead he inherited the majority of his players and that team went on to do zippo after their championship.

Unless he turns around things in a HURRY, he will certainly be the worst Leaf GM in the last 20 years in my books.

I can't believe we had all the glory under Quinn for all those years, of course without ever reaching the pinnacle, and then had this death spiral imposed upon us by the sheer incompetence of JFJ and Burke.

I actually think I hate Burke. Like, pure hate. I hated a lot of the moves JFJ made, but not sure I ever hated him. But I hate Burke and his crony Wilson like no other.

There's a possibility that by the end of the next draft, they'll have completely destroyed this franchise for another decade. All it takes is a few more stupid trades, letting good players walk, bringing shit players in and taking on some bad contracts for picks.

Are you joking?

Poni for a 3rd??

This guy should be re-signed asap. 25 goals and a good defensive presence and not even 30 years old? Come on.

A 2nd is a massive underpayment.

At this point we certainly don't. The one good thing about moving those guys is that every bit of capspace is like gold, and it will enable us to sign FA's, or perhaps even better, make some trades to absord extra salary, as Burke has recently talked about.

This is the only ray of hope I see right now. Pretty much every team is either up against the cap or desperate to shed salary for financial reasons. You want to move Contract A? We'll take it, along with Prospect B or Young Player C.

This is a dangerous game to play if you bring in the wrong guys, though.

Holy shit.

Your post just alerted me to the possibility that we might go through the exact same thing next year. All the while we figured we'd be at the top of the league by the 2011 draft.

No 1st and mired in the cellar.

Holy jesus, I don't think I can handle another 82 games and a draft like 2010 again.

.

What are you, a Habs fan? 17 of the 23 regulars on the roster that season were brought in by Burke, including two of the top three defencemen in the league at that time, and the team's leading goal-scorer. In the next two seasons the Ducks went 89-60-15 (.543 winning percentage) and won a playoff round while losing in seven games in the first round the other time. It's not a world-beaters record but I would certainly take a good team like that right now, wouldn't you?

There is some melo drama going on here.

The reason you trade Stajan and Poni is because you can get something for them, and the Leafs CAN'T lock anymore 2nd liners into long term deals for big money. The only UFA I'd consider resiging is Stajan, and only if he took a home town discount. Just can't afford to be paying these guys $3-$4 million. Can't do it.

And I think Kadri and Stalberg can do a pretty nice job replacing them.

And I'm getting really annoyed having to keep repeating this but those worried about the 2011 Draft need not be. It's the worst in fifteen years. Utter crap.
