Leaf Rumours

C'mon, JCY. He built a team known for choking in the playoffs. I haven't looked back to see, but did they ever even get out of the first round?

He turned a bad team into a first round playoff team.

I don't doubt he'll at least be able to do that at some point here.

But building us into the Cup winner, the dynasty we deserve to be, as he advertized on his way in?

Doubt it.

He needs to actually DO something to turn this around, not just watch us play miserably and lose every night.

Its not like there are tons of trades going on and he's sitting by idly.

He made a ton of moves in the offseason, and there is no reason he won't again.

You're being a little ridiculous.

Why because in his first season here they are bad?

Come on man. You need to take a step back and not think about this team for a bit.

Yeah, I don't see the point in attempting to trash Burke's track record. There's no question that he put in a solid performance in both Vancouver and Anaheim. He may not have turned the Canucks into a contender, but he turned them from a joke of a franchise into a consistently competitive team. And then like it or not, he build the majority of that Anaheim Ducks team that won the Cup, and if Bryan Murray had kept on running the team and Burke had not been hired, they'd have won jack shit. Kind of like the Senators under Murray's watch.

However, that being said, his good track record doesn't change the fact that his job performance in Toronto so far has been an abysmal failure.

This is pretty much how I feel. He has been a disappointment in Toronto thus far given his bluster regarding accountability and truculence, but that doesn't negate from his past successes. Separate situations should be judged on their own merits and not in tandem with one another.

Obviously this season has been a disappointment. But its mostly because of guys Burke didn't bring in (Wilson, Toskala, Blake, Grabo, etc.).

How can you bash Burke for the canucks being playoff chokers, when he then went on and built a non-choker in Anaheim?

As for Burke in general - he has the balls to make the big moves, and that will stand him in good stead wherever he's GM.

Im fine and dandy with the big moves.

But so far, his inability to do anything about the deadweight is what is proving to be, I guess, "dissappointing".

I mean, I mention it again, Gainey has had had the balls to cut Laraque and actually managed to move the likes of Latendress and Chips and get decent returns. And by no means Gainey is an awesome GM but if he was able to get those returns, Burke should have done his best to trade some deadweight when he didnt have vulture GMs proposing him crap deals as he is having now.

He took over a Ducks team that went to the third round in his first season there, then he added Pronger and won the Cup the year after.

The follow up to that year, the Ducks were gone in the first round and last year gone in the second round.

This year they're sitting 11th in their conference.

He was able to parlay a good core into a successful playoff team - temporarily.

They've declined drastically since that time. Which of course saw Burke - Mr. man of his word - bust out of his contract and take over here.

Financially it was impossible to keep the Cup winning Ducks team together. With the cap in place, teams will max contracts will always be scouring for bargains and/or saving capspace to load up at the deadline with expiring contracts.

Players from the Ducks Championship team Burke aquired:

Selanne, Kunitz, Marchant, Moen, Thornton, Parros, May, Neidermayer, Pronger, Beauchemin, O'Donnell, Dipenta, Huskins, Jackman.

That is 7 of 12 forwards, and all 7 defensemen.

Who of significance have they lost other than Pronger?
