Leaf Rumours

Without Getzlaf, Perry, McDonald, Pahlsson, and Giggy there was no Cup either.

The point of my argument is that if Burke stood pat and didn't bring in Neids, Pronger Selanne or Beau there is no cup, period.

Those guys turned out to be the missing pieces of the puzzle. HUGE pieces.

The Federov trade turned out to be a brilliant move based on Beaus play during that run

Did I say Burke did absolutely nothing to earn the Cup that year?

LoF you gotta' learn to pick your battles, man. Just drop this one -- it's basically echoing a common Habs/Sens fan tactic before the season began and you don't want to be associated with that, do you?

Clearly, I see many things differently than the majority of the popular posters here, but I don't think I'm wrong, sorry.

He's been able to ice an ultra competitive team pretty much every single year till this one and win the Cup multiple times.

Burke hasn't.

really?

Vancouver

97-98: 64pts - out of playoffs
Burke Hired
98-99: 58pts - out of playoffs
99-00: 83pts - out of playoffs
00-01: 90pts - round 1
01-02: 94pts - round 1
02-03: 104pts - round 2
03-04: 101pts - round 1

Anaheim

03-04: 76pts - out of playoffs
Burke Hired
05-06: 98pts - round 3
06-07: 110pts - won cup
07-08: 102pts - round 1

Toronto

07-08: 83pts - out of playoffs
08-09: 81pts - out of playoffs
- Burke Hired Midseason
09-10: 67pts* - out of playoffs*

So, two good years after falling into a team with plenty of assets and a lot of failure otherwise.

I'm pretty sure history will show the two good years in Anaheim to be an anomaly.

I think you oughta review the assets he gave up to make Anaheim a contender.

Vancouver a contender? Only in the minds of their fans and you. Those teams couldn't even crack the conference finals.

Before you point to the goaltending, just look who went to the wall for that sieve.

Yes, really.

By ultra competitive, I meant in the playoffs, of course.

Burke:

“I know what fans are saying,” said Burke. “Why doesn’t he do something? The only answer I can tell you it’s not for lack of trying.

“Do you think I like driving home after every game? I understand the fans frustration, believe me. If anyone driving home from (Tuesday’s) game (against Los Angeles) is discouraged, imagine my ride home.

“The fact is, the team’s not winning and I haven’t made any changes. I understand, this is the GM’s problem. I accept that. You want to blame somebody, blame me. It’s my job to get it right. It all ends up on my desk ... I thought we had something (a trade) in November. That fell apart.

"Unfortunately, (talking trade) is like being a farmer. You plant your crop and then you do nothing but wait.”

From Strickland:

This is far form the first time the agent for Toronto forward Jamal Mayers and GM Brian Burke have had discussions of trading the Maple Leafs forward. The bottom line is Burke should and likely will give this guy a chance to play elsewhere. It’s not easy playing 6-7 minutes a game on most nights and Mayers deserves a chance to play in a competitive environment. Any team looking for depth should take a look at this guy. He can play wing or center, plays an in your face style of play, and is one of the better conditioned athletes in the league. Mayers has always been one of those players who could help a team especially during the grind that comes with the Stanley Cup playoffs. He’s also very productive when it comes to face-offs and his 57% would rank in the top 15 if he’d taken enough draws not to mention he can kill penalties. His agent Pat Brisson still feels it’s a little too early to find him a new home but that time will likely come before the deadline.

Word is Toronto forward Matt Stajan would like to stay with the Leafs and would probably accept less money to stay there if Brian Burke gives him that option.

Strickland is a Blues blogger and Mayers played a lot better with the Blues than the Leafs. It only makes sense that he has a much more positive view of him as a player.

Well boo ****ing hoo. Get on your horse and call someone else. Dont cry over something that didnt work out.

Dying to know what this near deal was.

Something tells me we should be happy it didn't go through.

Probably something insane like trading Kulemin or White for some veteran help to try to push us into the post-season.

I bet it was Ian White and a pick (you know for good measure) for Rob Scuderi or some semi-truculent bloke that fit Burke's "philosophy".
