Leaf Rumours

Staal I think is the number one choice... however Richards is also an interesting case. He could probably do very well with Kessel.

In order to fit Richards, we'd have to clear more salary. But a Richards/Kessel combo would be an extremely quick and talented combo.

If Burke does to the Talbot thing, it gives him his perfect 3rd line centre. A player who rises as well when the games matter. (he really stepped things up in the playoffs)

But this then makes Primeau a trade piece. Primeau may not be impressive with us, but he has opened the eyes of others. If you listen to the announcers and commentators, they all see Primeau playing very well, and doing the little things right.

He could be a good piece to a playoff team in need of some veteran presence and a big body.

I still would like a top six forward/centre, but if Talbot is the one we can get, then so be it.

In the off season, Burke could trade Schenn for a first rounder or that top six forward. But if he packaged him with Poni now, you could probably get something pretty good in return.

I don't mind talbot, but let's not mistake talbot for a top 6. Talbot is a very good 3rd liner ... but he's a 3rd liner.

If we trade Poni for Talbot, then we've just traded a top 6 for a role player, albeit an excellent one. Poni should be one of our biggest trade baits still available to help us get a top 6 ... or at least get us a pick so we can draft one.

Of course, that begs the question - why not just re-sign Poni and we keep a top 6, 2-way forward in Poni? I really have no problem keeping Poni, and I hope Burke does too unless he gets a very good offer on the table.

I didn't call Talbot a top six... I called him a perfect third line centre... which makes Primeau available to trade.. (I know your not getting a top six with him)

but a deal like Primeau and Kabs could be a GREAT trade for a team looking to go deep into the playoffs.

Primeau Poni and Kabs for Staal Talbot and a first.

Staal (if traded) will not be moved until the offseason. The Pens are in their annual hunt for players to line-up with Crosby and Malkin - but not at the expense of core players.

I wouldn't do Primeau + Poni for Talbot. I wouldn't even do Poni for Talbot straight up.

Poni is worth Talbot + 3rd IMO.

Primeau is worth little ... probably a 3rd.

And Pittsburgh's 1st is almost a 2nd, so I'd like to do better than Staal + 1st for Kabby. Staal is somewhat overrated IMO. Many believed if given the icetime he can be a legit top 6 forward, but this season he's on pace to almost identical stat as last year, which is ~ 20G 50Pts. The POTENTIAL is there, but he could very well end up as a career 25G 60Pts forward.

If Kabby is put on the market, he should be the biggest fish after Kovalchuk and should get us more than Staal + a 1st that's almost a 2nd.

I think in some cases you need to overpay... I don't think Staal is overated. Whenever he is given top two lines time he produces. He would boost then penalty kill by 5 % alone . Add in Talbot and Sjostrom, then you boost it incredibly.

Primeau would give the Pens that third line centre that knows that's his role. He won't be nearly as good as staal but he wont' cost that much either. Kaberle helps Gonchar this year and replaces him next year. for the same money.

Sure we lose on the Poni for Talbot but Talbot replaces Primeau and is that perfect role player to build on. Ask for the first is for the Kaberle deal, and then ask for a third or second as well. But you won't get it.

Good deal for both teams.

Marleau Staal Kessel
Kadri Bozak Stalberg
Hanson Talbot XXXX
Orr Rosehill XXXX

Staal @ 4mill beats Kovy at 10. Sure the goals are no where near the same, but I think Staal (like his brother) is solid character and leadership.

He showed up huge in the playoffs ( and didn't go down to injury (weakone in my opinion) in the final game like the golden boy. )

I wouldn't be too hopeful of the Pens giving up Staal.

Only reason to would be if they couldn't afford him. But they can.

The other reason would be if they lose Gonchar and need a puck moving defender.

They know how important that sort of player is, and if they can't fit him in salary wise they'll probably have to look for a trade... and Staal's their best and most viable chip for a high caliber puck mover.

And that's the exactly reason we shouldn't let Kaberle go unless there's a offer that knock our socks off.

Guys like Kaberle are hard to find. Guys like kaberle who are signed to under-valued contracts, and is content with playing on a rebuilding team is impossible to find.

Kessel must be wondering if he is going to be triple teamed for the rest of the season.

Kessel must be the happiest guy in the Leafs dressing room right now.

First, he has a new poster boy come into town who has a better track record and accomplished more than him, and will take the spotlight off of him a bit.

Second, Phaneuf is gonna draw a lot of attention away from Kessel on the ice on the PP, as defenders won't be able to just stay on the left side and clog Kessel and Kabs. This is gonna open up the whole PP for us now, and Kessel should be the primary beneficiary of it.

He is one happy dude right now.

Scuttlebutt from a habs "insider" is that Lecavalier nixed a deal to the Leafs before Burke finalized the Dion deal.

I love Poni and would love to have him here next year, but his value to us as a trade piece is undeniably high, and he could be used as the centerpiece of a deal to get us the young center we need.

And the best part is, he'll likely go UFA and we can have a shot at bringing him back on July 1.

We have to trade him, even if it's just for a 2nd, but hopefully as part of a package for much more.
