Leaf Rumours

If I'm Edmonton that's a brutal deal. Why would they give up basically a low first and a low 2nd just to dump 2 mill or whatever he makes for one more season?? Craziness.

Pretty much this. Edmonton does not give up prospects/picks to dump 2 million. What would they be freeing up space for? All the UFAs that will not be signing there?

Edmonton has Hall/Seguin/Fowler, MSP and Eberle coming in next year. Add that to guys like Brule, Cogliano, Gagner. I could very well see them wanting cap space to go after some veteran help.

Souray, Bulin, Hemsky, Horcoff, Visnovsky, Penner, Gilbert...

And a bunch of guys in the $2-3 mill range.

They don't have cap space.

Today's big loser is Peter Chiarelli. He needs to grow a sack. There was no excuse for Boston not to end up with Kovalchuk.

He has chemistry with Boston's star centre, they could have used the deal to shed some salary. And they could easily have afforded to deal both a first and second in the 2010 draft, seeing as that they have Toronto's picks which both should be better than Boston's (especially if they bring in Kovalchuk).

They needed a sniper -- well, there was their sniper.

Bit mistake by Chiarelli. Big, big mistake.

Why does he need to tank it? He's guaranteed a top ten pick plus a pick between 31 and 40.

he should have manned up and brought in Kovalchuk. He had the assets to get it done. Epic fail.

Dreger - LA, Ana, Dal, Wash, Phi, NYR on Souray's trade list. Hard to trade an injured player, but Souray expects to be back 3 wks before playoffs.

Souray may not be impossible to move.

i disagree. new jersey's window of opportunity is small. they didn't lose anybody that will make a huge impact down the road.

so you either take the chance with kovalchuk.. or make a similar trade for a player in a similar situation.

kovlachuk might be the 4th best player in the world right now which makes him a pretty good player to take that chance on.

cormier projects as a 4th line grinder, bergfors is a 2nd or 3rd liner and oduya is nothing special. and the first will be a late pick in a relatively weak draft.

atlanta did as well asny team has done trading a rental player. but new jersey has made a smart move here.

they simply have to push for the cup while they have marty and elias.

Sorry, msun, put that post in the wrong thread and move it.

Here's what he was replying to:

"Anyone who trades for this guy is getting hosed. Why? Because he's looking to rape the salary budget down the road. So, you either let him walk or screw your cap.

Lou got hosed, imo. Losing and desperate move."

What exactly did he give up of value?

Lou just made Jersey the odds on favourite in the east imo.

1st in GA/G
2nd in SA/G

21st in Goals/G
13th in Shots/G
10th PP

Sure looks like the best defensive team in the league just added the 4th best offensive player on the planet.....and gave up smallish 22 yr old 2nd line upside winger, a 28 yr old defender with 4 points this season, a late round first and a vastly over rated prospect for a run at the cup.

Just a rough and dirty extrapolation for shits and giggles

Jersey: 21st in G/G at 2.54 per game.

Kovalchuk: .63 GPG
Bergfors: .22 GPG

Jersey gains .41 GPG

New Jersey GPG = 2.95 GPG

NHL rank: 6th
