Leaf Rumours

Pavelski + Couture for Kaberle

****...that's a trade I would have a hard time saying no to.

Pavelski is a 60-70 pt centreman already...and Couture is on a 112 point pace in the AHL as a 20 yr old.

I like Couture, but I think we should let Pavelski hit 60pts once before calling him a 70pt centreman.

Honestly, I'd rather go with Gunnar over most of those guys and then just fill Gunnar's spot with someone in the sytem.

Beauch Phaneuf
Gunnar Schenn
Komisarek Aulie

I still don't want to see Kabs go. Our D looks naked without him penciled in there.

And if he does go, honestly, it has to be for some absolutely ridiculous return. Staal and 1st . No Poni required.

I would take Hamhuis as our #3/4 to play with Komi at $3 mill, but we can't spend more than that on another d-man.

Beauchemin - Phaneuf
Hamhuis - Komiserak
Gunnarson - Schenn

That's still a top-5 defense core in the league. But one thing I wouldn't mind seeing is if Schenn can get his clapper going on the PP.

He's been ripping shots the last few games and could develop quite the goal-scoring touch given the chance.

If you trade Kabby you don't really need to replace him on the PP. With Kessel and Phaneuf on either side you really don't need a Kaberle to move the puck around. Just someone with a big shot, who can play the top of the umbrella.

60 point pace last year, 65 point pace this year. Surely you, or all people, are not calling someone else out for slightly inflating production projections?

I gotta say, that Sharks blueline didn't look all that impressive last night.

Boyle's great, but there are a lot of questions marks after that. Vlasic's banged up. Blake looks his age. Murray, Huskins, Wallin are decent depth players, but the young Leafs really took advantage of them when they were on the ice last night. I could only imagine what they'd look like in a playoff series against the Hawks or Caps.

If they want to win a cup, I think they need another legit top pairing defender.

and Antropov not a 30 goal man then?

calling a guy who posts 59 points in 82 games a 60 point scorer is the same as calling a guy who scores 28 in 82 a 30 goal scorer.

calling a guy who scores 59 points in 82 games a 70 point scorer is not the same.

seeing the other lineups, I thought of this...

trade kaberle and Poni for Staal and whatever... or off season see what you can get for Carter and or Staal.

since both are at the same price as Kabby and Poni, you can still sign a UFA like Marleau.

Turn Kadri into a winger and then balance the attack like this.

Marleau Staal Kadri
Kulemin Bozak Kessel
Mitchell Hanson Sjostrom
Deveaux Rosehill Orr

Thats SOLID. Kessel gets away from top defenseman, and he stays with Bozak. Kulemin continues to be a beast on the forecheck and that is a good line.

It's a really good thing I called Pavelski a 60-70 point centre then, and not a 70 point centreman.

but i'd have a ton of interest in martin, zidlicky, or michalek. i think any of them would fit the bill nicely -- especially zidlicky, who is just a step down from kaberle.
I totally agree.

Yes, Kaberle is a league above all these guys, but the more I think about it, the more I think keeping Kaberle and giving him 17 min (or even low 20's) a game is a waste.

In 5 on 5 situation, we already have Phaneuf, Komi, Beauch and Schenn ... they're all very solid ES minute guys, and Phaneuf and Beauch can give you close to 30 min a game, Komi and Schenn can give you 25-26 min easily.

So you don't really need to replace Kaberle's ES times. What you need to replace, is his PP times. You need a PP QB who is worthy of top PP minutes, and isn't a total liability in ES. You'll give him 5th-6th ES minutes ... very similar to how Kaberle was used the last few games when he only saw 17 min.

So if a good enough package comes knocking on the door before trade deadline, I'm not totally against the idea of taking that route.

I guess I keep going back and forth on it...because really, moving Kaberle for the sake of keeping Komisarek makes me a little queasy.

Pavelski is good. He is sick on the draw, and a top notch Pker. He led Sharks forwards in blocked shots each of the last two years, and is up over 60% on draws this year.

Only problem is he's probably looking for a big raise. $4-$5 million I'd guess.

They probably want to deal him so they can keep Marleau.
