Leaf Rumours

Thornton seemed more dangerous to me.

But to be quite honest, none of them really looked very good, which is why losing to them stings.

I'm certain they want to move Kaberle. I don't like it, but if it can land some serious young assets, that would be a good thing.

We need someone with elitish potential though of it's a dumb move.

That's the main reason I would even entertain a Pavelski + Couture package is that what Couture is doing in the AHL this year for a player his age is mental.

What Tlusty did at the same age was impressive, but Couture is producing significantly better than that.

1.44 PPG in his draft year in the OHL, and in his rookie AHL season as a 20 yr old, 1.36 ppg in a fairly significant (33 games) sample.

Tlusty is exhibit A in why not to project off AHL stats.

That said, it's a very encouraging transition from junior to the AHL. I find it hard to judge guys this way though, especially less than a half season of stats. Need some scouts for this forum.

I'm not a big fan of Pavelski. Not that he's not good, but we don't exactly need another smallish playmaking centre.

I want some beef in the top six.

Interesting Exelby, who made a trade request about 2 weeks ago, had a change of mind since the Phaneuf / JSG trades.

Two weeks ago, Exelby made it be known that he would not be opposed to a trade. Now, he could be second-guessing that a bit.

“It has been a lot of fun coming around here lately,” Exelby said. “Sometimes it takes a big shakeup to really get a team going that has been struggling. I like the feeling in here.

“You get the crusty veteran attitude, but we have a lot of youth and exuberance.”
I have no doubt Exelby will still be traded if there's a taker, but interesting to hear about the big difference in the dressing room chemistry from various players.

couture had a tough time staying healthy in junior, and he fell at the draft because of it. he is a pretty comparable prospect to kadri, and if they can get him as a centrepiece in a kaberle deal then it's a trade the leafs have to consider. couture is going to be very good.

Considering Marleau - I've got to say that he seems like a salary/production guy. Is it any coincidence that this is a contract year for him?

The team that gives him 4-5 years on a contract will see 1-2 seasons of decent production IMO.

Marleau will put up 60-70 points each year, barring injury.

As for Exelby, of course he's loving it. Finger looks to be permanently on the outs now, and Exelby is firmly our #6, plus we're playing really well, so what's not to love?

Too bad (for him) he'll be traded within the next couple of days.

here's another idea..

kaberle for vlasic and couture

vlasic is having a bad year, sure, but showed some offensive flair last season, and is only 22.

it gives the leafs a young, talented defender who has proven himself to be a competent puck mover and a decent option on the pp to replace kaberle with. and, of course, they get a young forward with good upside in couture.

san jose gets that top pair defender that they clearly need to push for a cup this season...

San Jose clearly has to do something this year to get into the SC finals.

There are rumours of them wanting Kubina this year, but who knows what they are willing to give up.

Blake should be done next year and so picking up Kabs would be a great bet for them. Kabs is a better move for them for this playoff run...

Kabs feeding Boyle to Heatley Marleau and Thornton is 100% pure offense on the PP.

Grabovski + Stempniak for Couture.

Instantly gives them a real 3rd line.
heh ... yeah, right. ;)

You'd think it'd take more than Grabs and Stemp for Couture... a lot more ... but hey, after the Phaneuf trade, I'm not sure anymore ;)

Unfortunately there's only one Darryl Sutter, folks.

Add me to the list of people that would love to get Logan Couture in here.

He didn't miss too many games his draft year. In fact, he had 54 and also put up 78 points - 14 more than the previous season in which he played 65 games.

There is a red flag here but it happens after the draft. His production fell off significantly after the draft - 58 points in 51 games.

Not saying he's not the man, just pointing out that there is a red flag there.

No, msun is definitely right. Couture missed significant time in his draft year because of mono and ended up trying to play through it. Due to his senility or pride Kilrea was playing him 25-30 minutes a night for the 67s right when he came back and should have been playing light minutes. His status amongst scouts suffered as a result. He was one of those considered first overall material and he's proving it with Worcester now.
