Leaf Rumours

I don't see why Pitts would want out of that contract.. but if it's truly on the plate I could see Burke taking Kunitz off Pitts hands at the cost of a first rounder.

If Kunitz = Poni

then

Kunitz/1st > Poni

2009-10
Chris Kunitz - 32gp, 8g, 22pts (82gp, 20g, 56pts)
Alex Ponikarovsky - 60gp, 19g, 41pts (82gp, 26g, 56pts)

2008-09
Chris Kunitz - 82gp, 23g, 53pts
Alex Ponikarovsky - 82gp, 23g, 61pts

It's a late first. Potentially a very late first.

And you really have to like Kunitz to give him 3.7 million for two more years. I think he's the type of player who benefits from being on a good team - I don't see him as a guy who makes his linemates better.

The 1st would be for dumping Kunitz's future contract and replacing him for this year with a comparable producer for less money. Poni will not be significantly cheaper than Kunitz on his next deal, I don't think.

It's taking on salary for the first. Poni is UFA.

Kunitz was under Burke previously. He knows the player well. His production is down but the pick is easily worth the risk.

Kunitz has several advantages over Poni. Statistically they're about as close as they come - with one very important distinction on a Burke-run team. Kunitz hits.

Kunitz is a Burke player - if he's in play (with a pick) then I don't see Burke turning them down.

Poni's a better physical presence than Kunitz is, IMO.

and correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Kunitz have injury concerns?

Kunitz and Poni each have their pros and cons. At the end of the day, they are very, very comparable players.

Kunitz is 31 though, and has never cracked 25G. He's really a marginal top 6 at best, and he isn't going to get better.

But for a 1st, even if it's a late first, I guess I can handle that contract. It's tough to get any 1st rounder these days.

No, not really. Played all 82 games in each of last 3 seasons. This is the first year he's missed significant games (abs strain) ... and it's not chronic.

yeah, I could see Burke going for this.

a player he knows and likes, a proven winner, who plays his style, and comparable to Poni overall (so the roster isn't negatively impacted), and likely signed for a similar amount as Poni will get, and for a reasonable term (2 years).

and he gets his all-important 1st round pick, which at this point sits at 23rd overall. which at least might be good enough to package with some other picks to move further up the draft.

Not sure I see it from the Pens' angle, though, unless this is directly tied to getting another player - either we're giving them a guy like Stemp as well, or they're trading for a bigger-money winger that they need capspace for.

They're trying to win a cup - moving Kuntiz for Poni doesn't get them anywhere closer by itself.

Kunitz is 30.

His goal/point totals label him as a solid second liner and decent 1st line option.

He's had some injury trouble this season, but only missed a single game in the last 3 seasons.

I have a little time so I dug up some info about Chris Kunitz from other boards ... it's pretty interesting:

"In short, you'll like Chris Kunitz. He's got everything except the hands."

"Kunitz fits well in the Penguins system. He may not quite justify his contract, but isn't far off. "

"Always a man of inspiring words, some of which don't make the cut for the main page"

"Chris Kunitz is a pretty perfect fit for the Penguins. He's not that great offensively and mostly leeches off great players, but he's tough and he won't let anyone take liberties with his linemates. I think he has a lot of moral courage, as inappropriate as that sounds. He's the kind of guy you want on your team, especially when you have a simpering little [expletive deleted] that gets punked by toothless Russians on your team. He'll be the 2nd best Avenger on the Penguins behind Pierre McGuire."

heh ... I like the last line.
