Leaf Rumours

The blues are going to go to arbitration with Chris Stewart. They need all the money they can get to resign pietrangelo. If someone does offer clarkson something stupid and Horton gets something stupid in a non hockey market then getting that toughness on the wings could be had with Stewart.

I wouldn't be too worried about that hole on the wing without MacA or Frattin.

A 2nd line winger is fairly easy to replace. And Nonis is too prudent to give a ridiculous contract to one.

Given the minimal price paid, how?

Frattin being a bowling ball and putting up points + Scrivens playing more than a total backup role + Bernier not clearly playing more games/better than Scrivens. If that happens, add in the pick and the initial returns could easily look pretty ugly. Basically, Bernier has to contribute to the Leafs more than Frattin and Scrivens do to the Kings to be worth a 2nd rounder on top of those two. When you look at how Frattin has shown the potential to play...

Or put another way: We gave up 3 assets for 1 and at least 2 of the ones we lost have a very real potential to be the best in the trade.

Of course there's a very real chance Bernier comes in and does great and we all forget what we gave up for him, but I think there's a very real chance that in a few months we're looking at him having played minimal games, Frattin being a top 6 player, and Scrivens performing as well as Bernier and going 'uh... what did this net us?'

I don't see how any of that would result in the returns looking ugly. Scrivens will be lucky to see more than 15 games next season at league-average back-up performance, while Bernier has a good chance at becoming an elite starter. At the very least he represents a significant improvement over Scrivens.

Frattin is absolutely nothing special. He's a somewhat undersized physical third-line checker who takes too long to release his shot and was a total non-factor offensively after the first ten to fifteen games last year. His consistency and lack of additional dimensions to his offensive game beyond that shot mean that his long-term upside is limited bottom six duty. He's a loss that could easily be replaced effectively from within (by guys such as Ashton, D'Amigo, Leivo, etc.) without the Leafs suffering much for his absence.

The second round draft pick will likely be between the 50 and 60 range, which is exactly the range that we were picking this year when we dealt away #51 in the Bolland deal. Chances are that you pick up a comparable player to Jesse Blacker or Jimmy Hayes in that range, neither of whom are impact players either.

It's a minimal package really.

With Gilbert being bought out. I think he'd be a great get to replace frasers minutes especially him being a right handed shot.

That's not a bad idea actually. He's a big boy and he has great mobility back there, can move the puck, and play in multiple situations. As far as bottom-pairing defenders go he would be a pretty good one.

We should definitely kick the tires on Coburn though.

The Flyers were close to dealing Coburn, who led their team in icetime last season (22min a game) over the weekend, but they wanted more and decided to keep him after the draft. After signing Lecavalier, the Flyers are right back up to the cap limit, and some feel Mason is not a legit #1 (DUH ... ) so they want to have the flexibility to go out and acquire a goalie, or, trade for a goalie and unload Coburn's cap hit at the same time.

Coburn also shoots L, unfortunately, but he's a serviceable dman still very much in his prime.

I'd consider a Liles-Coburn swap, but that's about it.
And PHI would make this trade because ..... ???

PHI's blueline was BAD (and it's funny all they've done in the summer was to add to their F, sign a veteran dman way past his prime to a bad contract, and buy out their #1G) but Coburn is a serviceable top 4 defenseman on most teams.

Liles, at this point, has negative trade value.

It is terrifying that a GM will overpay for him.
