Leaf Rumours

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Clowe.

Which is exactly what a GM should want. Everyone going apeshit about a handful of overhyped players (Horton due to his playoff heroics, and Clarkson due to Canadian media exposure), while a guy who has toiled out west in a non hockey market, who is probably better than either of the other two goes unnoticed because he had a down season.

Don't get me wrong, Clowe comes with some risks as power forward types tend to break down a little earlier than other types of players, but give me the guy who is more physical than either of the other two, tougher than the other two and has a hockey skill set as well rounded as Horton's, superior to Clarkson's.

Now, I'm not saying that there's a market innefficiency at work here, but if there is, we should try to exploit it. Dive in to try to land Clowe while the rest of the NHL GM's after spending their time and cap space on dangling it towards Clarkson & Horton.

I still think Clarkson ends up a Leaf, and I'm concerned that it will be for a contract I hate. I could live with 4 x 4.5, anything more and I'm going to have some serious distaste for the move though. I think we could get a better player on a better contract than that. Being a newfie as well, there's a decent chance that Clowe was a leaf fan growing up as well. The island is pretty much a mix of Leaf, Habs, & Bruins fans.

Based on numerous reports, including one from Dreger this morning, Clarkson wants to be a Leaf as much as the Leafs want him. If you listen to how excited Bolland was on radio interview about being to come home to play for his childhood team, you can expect the same for Clarkson.

Which is not to say he'll play here for peanuts, but anything semi-competitive and Clarkson will sign here. Now, in this crazy market, semi-competitive I think we're still talking about $4-4.5M x 4-5 years, which is overpayment, but not THAT bad.

I asked the same question - Clowe vs. Clarkson. However, in Clarkson, you more or less know what you're going to get. In Clowe you may be getting an Armstrong ... Clowe with his injuries and his poor season in 2012/13 is a big gamble. Clowe is also 1 yr older but apparently a lot more banged up. Which is not to say no, but he'd have to come a LOT cheaper for me to consider.

I'd say if Clarkson is Plan A, Clowe is Plan B.

And for the record, I like Clarkson ... I'd just hate to see us overpaying him massively for his 'intangibles'.

Then pass on him and sign the superior Ryan Clowe for less.
I am not even surprised how stupid NHL GM's can get anymore, so if Clarkson does get $6M in the market, good for him ... but that is insanity.

Of course, if you are in the Clowe camp, after Clarkson signing for $6-6.5M, what are you going to settle for? $3M? No way. You'd be asking for $5M if Clarkson gets $6.5.
