Leaf Rumours

Killer has media sources....Pierre Maguire is a media source.

Btw...if a Clarkson deal was "99%" done hours ago, it would be done by now.

But it's the Internet silly, time slows down as you approach the speed of light.

Relativity requires patience.

The numbers being thrown around this offseason are mind-numbing.

We shall see tomorrow how some of it pans out, but Bozak asking for 5 Million is insane.

Based on info I have seen im sticking to Clarkson to Oilers/Sens/Leafs; gut says Oilers as they habe offered most money. Detroit is looking at Weiss/Bozak but also good be dark horse for Riberio

Leafs are going the hardest for Horton, trying to convince him to come to his hometown, that is the guy they want the most. And he is listening, but his inner chicken might prevent that from happening. Clarkson dearly wants to come to Toronto, and I agree with Irish, this is a guy I WANT very, very badly.

Having coached and played, these kind of guys almost don't exist anywhere in society any more. I don't know if it is the vaccinations, the 34 BULL MARKET the stock market has been in, or the bpa in the plastic, but guys like Clarkson don't exist pretty well anywhere anymore, unless you go balls deep into the Appalachian mountains, and they are mostly inbred.

But MacT, I suppose, and I cannot speak for Edmonton, my sources are all guys hunkered down in MLSE world, seems like he knows what can take an enormously young team and take it into overdrive as well. I hope we don't get beaten out by Edmonton, they beat us out for Schultz.

We saw what a guy like McClement did for the team last year, well in my opinion, Clarkson is McClement on steroids. Not that he is, but he is just that type of guy, PLUS.

And everyone has to understand that free agent guys just always get overpaid, its their time and they deserved it. They came through a meatgrinder that thousands upon thousands of kids have tried to get through, and this is their prize.

If this day ends, and Clarkson or any other third liners or bottom-pairing defenseman haven't won the free agent lottery with the Leafs, I'll be happy. IrishWolfman's impassioned defense of Clarkson aside, spending huge amounts of money on "intangibles" in a cap system is insane.

Just got off the phone. Grabo apparently said to someone and it got back, that Carlyle was an idiot for the way he was handling the Great Grabo. So apparently, that didn't go over well.

Also, Leafs, if they don't get Bozak, will be getting Weiss. Sorry folks. And they are still competing for Clarkson. But won't go overboard as they feel they have a hometown advantage. And no one wants Dion Phaneuf, including the Leafs. I guess everyone saw him back down from Chara in a game seven hall of shame moment and no one in the old boys network wants a guy who doesn't stand up for his team at that particular moment.

The Leafs would LOVE to find someone to take Phaneuf off their hands. Love it. Franson is the new Phaneuf in the eyes of MLSE and they want him to have that role, without Dion lingering around.

Me? I think they should trade Phaneuf after he has a hot streak, like he does every year.

Heh, just went to hockeybuzz, they have a pretty good piece on Grabo. Apparently he was quoted by a reporter. Great stuff.

Toronto star had an article this morning, and an agent explained why Bozak is worth northbound of $5M and is every penny worthy of a $25/5 contract ... it's hilarious he compares Bozak to Jordan Staal, Mikko Koivu and their contracts.

Hmm ... let's see, Koivu had 2 x 60+ and 1 x 70+ point season. Bozak? None. In fact, Bozak can't even claim he had a 50 points season. Now it is true Jordan Staal also didn't have 60 or 70 point seasons, but Jordan Staal, all 6'4 of him, is a physical force down the middle, and a defensive specialist that Bozak can't compare.

He then goes on to say Zajac is a comparable, because of PPG in their careers. Even Zajac had 2 x 60+ point seasons, which is when he signed the contract with Lou. I'm sure looking at his numbers the past 3 seasons, Lou doesn't feel he should have given that contract. There's no doubt Zajac has a higher ceiling than Bozak.

Now, it IS true that Bozak brings more than offense to the table. Not an especially good defensive player, Bozak is a useful PKer (a pretty good PKer, in fact), he is good at the dot (funny how the agent used this to justify his contract demand ... if faceoff is really such a key element to the game, then Steckel would be making more $$ than he does now), he is good at shootout. All that is true.

What especially impressed me was how Bozak played in the playoff, vs. the Bruins no less which should be a challenge for a smallish guy like him. Despite a shoulder injury he suffered early in the series, which partially separated his shoulder, Bozak was useful and effective on the ice. He ended the seasons with 1G 2Pts in 5 games, not dominating by any means, but he was a much more useful player than, say, Grabovski in the series.

Bozak would NOT be on top of my list at all. I'd much rather go for Ribeiro at $6-7M, at least he is a consistent 70+ points producer.

It is true, however, in this crazy market, 50 point centers who can play in ES, PP and PK do not make $3-4M a pop. Considering Bozak's age, his chemistry with the team (especially Kessel), his health, and his body of work (won't sound 'professional' without mentioning that) I think I'd go as far as $4.5M x 5 yrs for Bozie.

That's IF I fail to sign Ribeiro or make a trade for Stastny.

Is Matt Cooke a ufa? Marek and some others say he'd be a perfect sign in Toronto. Is he an option or would that have to be a trade?

What better way to replace our biggest pest in komorov with the biggest pest in the NHL

Yes, 5 mill might seem a lot for Clarkie and I've watched the guy since junior.

But David Clarkson is a platoon sergeant. He puts it on the line for the guys he serves with. We haven't had one of those in a long time. What you pay Clarkie for isn't what he does on the ice, it's the fact that he's willing to inspire. I watched this kid for three years in junior. With the best centre in the OHL as his line-mate, he bled for his team.

You can't teach that George Armstrong, Charlie Conacher, even (dare I say) Dave Keon dedication to the logo on the front. It has to be something that they just do. And I've seen David Clarkson do it for years. You want that guy. He's it. You won't pay 5 million for what he does during the regular season. But you can't pay enough for what he does when the paycheques stop.

but that's what we have Colby Armstrong and Mike Komisarek for.

I don’t think Nonis will make a ridiculous signing like Clarkson for 6 years at 5 million. He has shown himself to be very intelligent and prudent as a GM, and I think he knows his cap-numbers and stats well.

I don’t think he’ll be able to make as many of the home-run trades that Burke did, because he’s not quite the same poker-faced, blustery salesman. (And already, Nonis has given up more relative value for Bernier than Burke ever did in a trade.) But I also don’t think the bold Komisarek for $4.5 million and Armstrong for $3 million kind of moves are in Nonis blood the way they were in Burke’s either.

I expect Nonis will make at least one good value signing.

Cooke is a UFA; and now rumors Clarkson can go as high as 7 yrs/between $42 and $49 million; **** that we better not sign him, hoping what my buddy told me about Edmonton or Ottawa is true.
