Leaf Rumours

Subban was allegedly asking for 5.5 during before the little contract dust up with Bergevin last....there's no chance he's not coming for blood after winning a Norris, none. You'll be lucky to get him for less than 7.5

I like Franson, always has from the moment we made the trade.

His cockiness and immaturity rubbed Wilson off the wrong way, and Wilson almost ruined Franson's career (as a leaf, anyways) ... I bet ya Franson was probably a mid-round pick away from being traded in the Wilson era.

But with the Schenn trade, and Gardiner injury, Franson has been given chances to play a more dominant role under Carlyle, and I think he's come through every test that he's been put through this year.

Franson has always been a player with all the tools but missing the toolbox, and this year for the first time it looks like he's putting it together. It may be Carlyle, it may be his age and maturity, and it's most probably a combination of them all. But this guy can be better than he is today ... he has the potential to be a #3 or even #2 guy.

And, he's a big Leafs fan to boot.

Give him $4-4.5M per, sign him to a long term contract and lock him up. With his offensive upsides he's always a trade asset even if he isn't a fit anymore down the road.

I bet he wants $5M. He rightfully sees himself as no less than $1.5m less than Phaneuf.

Phaneuf plays top minutes against the opposing teams best players every night.

Franson barely plays middle pair minutes. He's not in Phanuef's league as of yet. Franson's a 3.5-4.5 dman at this point in his career. When Franson stats playing 23-25 minutes, then we can start talking about real big money for him.

Spoke with my buddy today and Leafs are reportedly dangling Kulemin in a deal for a d-man, Leafs feel they have a lot of players from the Marlies that can fill in holes on the bottom 6; no bites for Liles at all thus far but as you ger further into free agency teams get desperate.

**** off! Even if Kuly doesn't get back to his 30 goal season, i guarantee there's nobody on the Marlies that can play a 2-way game that he can..not to mention someone that has his work ethic, skill level, shot, speed and so on. Huge mistake imo.

Phaneuf makes a lot of mistakes too, and despite the extra minutes, Franson's offensive production is right there with Phaneuf's.

I'm not saying he should get $5M. I'm just saying that if he's looking to the best comparable on the team, I get where he's coming from. But it's too early for him to cash in after one good year. Even though I think he's broken through, he needs to recognize the lack of track record.

Kuly is amazing. I would think he's one of Carlyle's favorites. I don't see them shedding his $2.8M contract and replacing him with Brad Ross. I see them extending him, actually.

It would be truly stupid to trade Kulemin especially for a defensemen. Unless he is looking for a big raise.

Kulemin is the type of depth you need on a championship team. You can't have 6 AHLers playing the bottom six. What if there are injuries etc to the top 6?

Nonis is taking this team backwards if he truly feels like he can shed players like Kulemin and replace them with Marlies.

Kulemin is a UFA after this season. They will have to either re-sign him or trade him, otherwise they would lose him for nothing.

That's the crux of the issue here. Do we consider him a key supporting component of the Leafs moving forward or is he something better jettisoned for a return that makes sense rather than losing him for zilch?

Even if Kulemin just has a 15-20 gl/35-40 pt season, he's still going to want at least 3.5-4M a year over a multi year contract. And given the UFA contracts recently, I could be underestimating his future contract.

There's only so many 2nd/3rd line multi million dollar forwards that we can afford.

Definitely. I think by adding a similar player in Clarkson(being good at board battles and all) i think now we have legit guys who can go out there and cycle well and score goals too. If you get rid of Kuly, imo you're going kinda backwards and you won't be able to easily replace that.

I’d have a tough time letting Kulemin go. He’s a pretty awesome 2-way player, one of the only the Leafs have up front (I think Bolland would be the other).

If there's one guy you extend for reasonable money and say to hell with Marlies, it's Kulemin.

He can do it all. Strong checking, more of an offensive role if required, intense hustle and physical play, and obviously a great attitude being a kid who does anything they ask of him.

Give Kuly term to help keep the cap hit lower and yeah, he's a keeper. As long as he never even mentions his 30 goal season as a starting point for his value, I don't see any reason why we can't get him at around the usual 3rd round rate of ~3.5 million on a 4-6 year deal.
