Leafs acquire Frederik Anderson from Ducks

Rebuilding teams always make moves like this. No one says the rebuild is over with any of them except the Leafs. Anyone look at the moves Buffalo has made the past 16 months?

His numbers were spectacular this year in the playoffs. Albeit a short stint, he wasnt the problem for the Ducks exit. I
17-9 career record in the playoffs. He must make enough of those "saves at the right time" saves.

Don't love the trade, but I don't hate it either.

To break down the trade 1st, he's not a proven starter, but we didn't pay "proven starter" rate. We paid in the same range that SJ paid to get Martin Jones, and Freddy has a better track record than Jones did before the trade. What this kind of indicates to me is that there aren't a bunch of kids Hunter is horny about at that range in the draft. If Hunter had rod for a number of kids likely to be available in that range, we likely don't make this trade. Maybe that's reading the tea leaves a little too hard. What this isn't though, is a Toskala or Raycroft move. Raycroft was one of the worst goalies in the league the year before we traded him, a lot of people forget that. The huge rookie season he had, was 2 years prior to our flipping Rask for him. Freddy isn't the guy I would have targeted, but he's at worst a league average goaltender. Toskala was a midget who had put up seasons of .908 & .901 just prior to the Toronto trade, again a way below average goalie that we paid a huge price for. This isn't that.

The contract at first glance bothers me as well, but more for term than for cap hit. 5 years is a long ****ing time to bank on a guy who has never been a legit plus starter. The 5M doesn't bother me at all, that's just where the goaltending market is right now, wait for Reimer to sign for 4.5 in free agency. The majority of the contract is UFA years, which is really the only positive I can think of.

So yeah, don't hate it because I see the HD SV% stuff, I see how mediocre a possession club Anaheim has been during his time with them (Mo shats can have a small negative affect on raw sv%), I see how Anaheim is 6th worst in the league time spent on the PK (which has a negative effect on raw SW...more PK shots faced, lower raw SV%) during Freddy's time with them. In general, I trust Dubas and our pro scouting department to have tools of sophistication we simply don't have access to, and I trust Shanny to ensure that those tools are being used in pro scouting evaluations like this.

Don't love it, because this isn't the guy I would have targeted knowing what I know with the tools I have at my disposal, I wouldn't have handed him a 5 year deal...and that imo is the worst part about this entire move, it contains the vast majority of the downside. For a guy without a track record as a #1, that sure has the potential to be something of an anchor.

Good post but shit he can't be worse than Bernier Leaf fans . His size alone will keep more pucks out of your net than Bernier . The term is a problem for sure and hope you get sone D to help out a bit more .

I would of went after Bishop who likely will be peddled this offseason due to cap issues, but Freddie should be an upgrade .
 
Look at what Edmonton has achieved with stop gap goalies. Sure their main problem is defense, but they have thrust that young top end talent in front of weak goaltending and defense and they've gone no where.

Like mentioned by someone earlier, next year we will be playing Matthews, Nylander and possibly Marner full time. Having every mistake they make end up in the back of the net breeds a scared style of play and kills development. (again look at Edmonton)

I also think/know that Lou, Dubas, Hunter, Shanahan, and Babcock know alot more about player evaluation than all of us combined.

I trust that they see something that we can't and I see that they were able to see Anderson as more than just a Cam Talbot.

Bishop is definitely a tier up in quality, but with only 1 yr left before UFA, any extension is going to be in the 8+ million dollar range, long term, with Mr Bishop on the wrong side of 30.

Our blueline will be fine, it requires patience more than anything else at this point. Very young, with a lot of talent in the system.

Don't worry skippy, Freddy or no Freddy, the Leafs will be tea bagging your boys again within a few years. With the talent influx we've got coming, our window is going to be a lot longer than Freddy's contract.

It's a good trade. The 2 draft picks wont be missed at all.

The contract might be scary though or amazing. Depends on what happens going forward.

The guy had his chance to play meaningful hockey for us and either flopped or was injured every time we actually needed him to play like we hoped he could. No hard feelings, I hope SJ signs him to legit 1B money and he wins a cup down there, but I have no desire to see him back.

He's a streaky mother ****er though. He'll go through tough stretches that will make you want to pull your hair out. Meh, maybe the nerd braintrust thinks he can shake the consistency issues because he goes through a lot of stretches of some elite play.

Actually, this is a big deal, because as much as I like Reimer, I do hate injury prone guys.

Has Anderson been fully healthy so far in his career? Hopefully all of the missed games were due to being platooned?
 
The guy is apparently known for being a tireless worker as well. Guys on Sportsnet were interviewing a reporter from out west who was talking about him going to the Anaheim Angels and working with their hitting coach to help him get better at tracking pucks, using his techniques of teaching how to pick up the spin on pitches/trajectories, etc. Pretty much the opposite of GQ Bernier and butter soft Reimer.

Nope, he has had some little nicks here and there. Some of those missed GP's were definitely due to injuries, but nothing chronic or serious. Part of the process of developing into an everyday #1.

All sample comps treat him well. That statistic is relative, and he has performed above average every year. Yes he needs to prove it over more games, and yes he's had less success as the minutes add up. He has a lot to prove. But his performance has been better, and far more consistent from year-to-year than Bernier and Reimer. He has been consistently average or better, even going by the non-relative numbers you posted. Unlike Remier and Bernier who have had one great year, one average year and one trash year.

Consistency in net is the most important attribute a goalie can bring. Sure you would rather have Price or Lundqvist, but a consistent average+ is valuable. He has been in the top half of the league in relative fsv% every single year. I'll gladly take that given what we have witnessed the last decade. You need consistent goaltending to contend.

Looking at the raw numbers I didn't get it, but the advanced stats, particularly the relative ones give reason for optimism. They are taking a big swing for the fences here, but its not a bad bet based on the numbers.
