interesting pickup. florida fans were super high on malgin when he first came up as a 19yr old 3yrs ago, after he was near ppg at 19 and 20 in the AHL.
this might actually be a good case of a guy whose expectations got out of whack and so he became a disappointment when really he's been pretty good at ages 19-22 in a depth role with poor linemates, though his production has dipped this year at 22 after 2 solid 3rd line type production years age 20 and 21.
Age 19: C- qoc, 0.83ap/60, 49.6cf% (+0.1relT), 44.9xgf% (-2.4relT)
Age 20: B qoc, 1.39ap/60, 50.6cf% (+1.5relT), 48.4xgf% (-0.6relT)
Age 21: C qoc, 1.39ap/60, 51.0cf% (+1.7relT), 47.4xgf% (-1.2relT)
Age 22: C qoc, 0.92ap/60, 52.0cf% (+2.7relT), 45.4xgf% (-1.4relT)
So he's faced solid 3rd line comp, not just 4th line fodder minutes. The production was legit 3rd line level the previous 2yrs, but has dropped off this year. The corsis are always solid. But he's been a bit underwater in terms of xgf%.
Dialling in on the xgf, it looks like the discrepancy with cf comes from the offensive side, not the defensive side. Where as he's a positive both offensively and defensively by corsi, he's only a positive defensively by xgf - so he's not been a guy on the ice for many quality scoring chances for his team.
(negative relative numbers are bad for offense, good for defense)
Xgf/60 relT: -0.2, -0.1, -0.4, -0.2
xga60 relT: 0.0, -0.1, -0.3, -0.2
so consistently good in terms of quality scoring chances against, but not so good on the offensive end.
the big question for me is whether he can actually play center or not.
