Leafs acquire Matt Murray

Kyle Dubas coughed up a 1st round pick to dump a one year/$6M contract.

Now he's taken on a salary dump of 2 years @ $4.7M and accepted a return of a 3rd round pick & 7th round pick.

I don't get it.
They obviously think he's some sort of bounce back candidate based off some stat they just invented, him being a great team guy in the Soo, and a video they showed him of a play where they hit pause and asked him what happens next.

Holy fuck these guys overthink goaltending.

It's a bit more of a layered situation imo.

We dumped Mrazek because he was horrific. Murray actually played well, but not the sample we ideally want.

Murray comes with only a two year commitment and sub $5M, which still lets us address other things. Kuemper probably gets $6M, and Jack probably the same if it's Edmonton, but both for 5 years minimum most likely.

And is Murray going to be substantially worse than Campbell or Kuemper to justify extra dollars and term, and not get a couple of picks? Honestly probably not.

I'm bummed that I feel there was a better deal to be made for him (i.e., 50%), and kinda shocked by that, but I'm not any less confident with this guy than any of the other available guys. And like I said earlier, playing on a great team like the Leafs, who knows what that will do for him.

Now go get Samsonov to double our odds at the lotto.

I am okay (not thrilled, but certainly okay) with Matt Murray being one of the 2 goalies we bring in.

Just seems very odd they couldn't find a way to reduce this cap hit. And basically makes it essential they bring in another strong goalie for the tandem. With the cap hit basically making it impossible to bring in a high-end 1A.

If this means Kuemper and Campbell are no longer options...

That leaves:

- Ilya Samsonov
- Eric Comrie
- Braden Holtby
- Thomas Greiss
- Martin Jones
- Kevin Lankinen

Yeah, this is pretty bad.

They must also have developed a complex equation that proves that the 3rd & 7th round picks they picked up in this trade have a greater value than the 1st round pick they coughed up when they were the ones salary-dumping a big unwanted contract.

Yeah, this is pretty bad.

Comrie is the best one there for me I think. But risky as fuck, neither Comrie or Murray will have played many games last year.

That's what I think as well but Murray? These guys are ready to win now. They probably looked at the Pittsburgh team when he actually played well.

Only a handful of legit 4-5 year goalies you can trust

Most give you a few good years then meh , total crap shoot with most goalies
