Leafs/Habs/Sens 2014-15

Meh, I think those that don't get it will either ask for clarification or ignore the thread.

The higher the percentage represents the better the player is doing correct? The relative to teammates comment is also throwing me off. Also, are you using any form of qualcom?

1) yup. It's fairly simple. A player is on the ice for a certain number of corsi events (shots, missed shots, blocked shots) for and against. The corsi for percentage tells us that a player who is on the ice for 6 corsi events for his team and 4 against his team has a 60% corsi for percentage.

2) the cf relative I'm using is actually pretty complex, and measures how each player's corsi % compares to the teammates he's on the ice with AND also compares those teamates performances on and off the ice. It's not at all simple but it's a very nice stat to look at to try and separate one player's performance from the team's overall performance.

3) I'm not using any quality of competition, both because i've read enough convincing arguments that overall it has a tiny effect on these numbers, and also just looking at the numbers we get such a tiny difference in the numbers that i don't even think we'd learn anything at all from them. most every player is between 49-51% in opponents' CF%, so it's kind of a useless number to use. the zone starts thing seems to be a much more significant number that actually has a big impact on CF% - which is why I'm using Zone-start adjusted stats all the time, because IMO the stats are almost meaningless in terms of player comparisons without accounting for that factor somewhat at least.

So for example, Malhotra has a 35.0 CF% and a -10.8 rel. That means opponents have a 65% CORSI when he's on the ice and he is doing worse that the team average by 10.8%? Considering Malhotra gets the defensive zone draws often, wouldn't that be the cause of his low CF% or have you adjusted that in your zone-start analysis? If so how do you adjust it? Sorry for the questions but I would really like to have a firm grasp on this.

Malhotra:

5v5 Total Unadjusted: 33.1cf%
5v5 Close Unadjusted: 34.0cf%

5v5 Total ZS Adjusted: 35.5cf%
5v5 Close ZS Adjusted: 34.9cf%

Now the adjustment here is simple removing all corsi events that occur within 10 seconds of the faceoff, so it's not perfect. That being said, it makes plenty of sense and probably does a good job of removing most of the zone start effects.

and I will say this - I have no proof of this, but from my experience with these stats they might break down a bit when it comes to the extrems of zone start usage. Phaneuf might have been a good example in previous years and Malhotra might be a good example this year - guys who are only getting 20% of their starts in the offensive zone. There is a chance that the zone start effects aren't linear and might increase on a more of a curve.....but while I see signs of that possibility i still haven't figured out a way to make that a logical argument that can explain the numbers well. But still, for now I am a bit more skeptical of the numbers for guys with extreme usage patterns.

At the same time, though, I'm pretty sure Malhotra stinks. I mean, even if you gave him a massive unjustified adjustement for zone starts - his corsi would still stink.

I agree Malhotra is not great and his corsi understandably sucks as he is only in the league for his faceoff and PK ability, nothing more. I just picked a name out of the list at random. I'm still a bit iffy on the ZS adjusted. WOuldn't there be three separate numbers based on NZ, OZ and DZ?

yeah I'm not actually listing zone start % because a) that's 3 numbers instead of one and b) that would leave us to have to guesstimate what effect the zone starts have on the cf%.

the "adjustment" used at Puckalytics.com is literally to remove all corsi events that occur within 10 seconds of a faceoff. this has the benefit of being very specific to the player. There isn't some blanket average adjustment factored in for every player, but they literally just ignore anything that happened within 10 seconds of a faceoff when that player was on the ice.

I know it is rare but wouldn't that eliminate data like goals scored right off the faceoff?

Also, what stat do you feel best represents a players on-ice value? Even corsi seems highly subjective.

right now I'm posting the ones I think are best - though it's always a balancing act between getting as many data points as possible and getting as relevant data as possible. Like with all stats, they won't be great unless the sample size is big enough.

And we have to remember that separating out individual performance from team performance is extremely difficult - especially since even when you use a "relative to teammates" stat it might not be enough of an adjustement.

In theory, though, a "zone start adjusted relative to team corsi close percentage" should be the best stat, but we're not at the point where all the adjustments are accurate enough.

But I think we have enough info that the numbers I'm using can give us a decent picture of how a player is playing, aside from possibly some extreme usage scenarios.

And remember, too, that this stat works much better in analyzing a team's overall current performance than it does at analyzing talent level or individual performances. In a sense we're working backwards here.

Oh excuse me, it's called The Stats Thread and the opening post is "Emelin +8 ,Gilbert +7 , top two +- guys for D core ."

you have to understand that the only reason the Habs board has a stat thread is because one poster (who I agreed with) complained about the Habs News and Notes thread constantly being cluttered with non news items such as +/- stats and ensuing arguments about the validity of such stats. It was basically created so the News and Notes thread would not be derailed.

Yes, Habsy clarified that for me already.

Manny is a type of player you get for his special skills. Other random stats are not the reason for playing him.

Malholtra is there for those important defensive zone faceoffs in a tight game. I can't count how many late goals to tie or cut the lead we've given up over the past few years cause we can't win a faceoff. So far that hasn't seemed to happen as frequently yet this year.

He seems to be a good penalty killer and 4th line checker. He's playing 11 and a half minutes a night right now and 3 minutes a night on the penalty kill which is tops for forwards on the team. As long as he doesn't get any more ice time than that I'll be happy.

Canadiens Montréal
Canadiens acquire defenseman Bryan Allen from the Anaheim Ducks, in return for forward Rene Bourque.
