Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Biggest difference she made was turning Brayden Point into an elite skater. It was a big question mark when he got drafted. He credits her for it every chance he gets.

Glad to hear she sorted out Point, but on our payroll, improving Spezza’s skating is pretty minimal returns for us.

i just think there’s been a bit of over praising towards her work with us.

Back to lurking… carry on!

Well she worked for two teams for several years and it's hard to deny that the Point thing was the biggest difference she made and it was the most obvious one. For the leafs there's Spezza, Matthews and I think she helped Rielly become a more efficient skater as well (Mo was always quick but Barb worked to get him to become more efficient ala Willy and less about pumping his legs 5000 miles a second.. it's a key part of playing big minutes).

Tough to judge her impact tho, I agree. The Point thing was the most obvious but I think if you look back at Spezza in his last year in Dallas and Matthews before he was drafted, you'd be surprised at how different their strides looked fundamentally.

Skating is not something that usually changes much after these guys have played hockey for 15+ years of their life so the fact that barb had any success would be reason to give her at least a little credit.

Didn't exactly pay off for *us* but Mason Marchment was someone she worked with a lot I'm pretty sure.

Think her payoff is typically going to be seen more in those fringe players, but regardless, teams (and especially ours) should be using every advantage available.

Of course, we also draft better skaters to begin with under Dubas.

And I mean, what she did with Point alone is reason that she has a lot of value even if the leafs didn't have their own Point. With time, I think she could have helped Nick Robertson a lot, for example. Because of covid they didn't get to work together much.

leading scorer for Russia at WJC.

.33ppg KHL in D+1

.50ppg KHL in D+2

despite getting no minutes.

Maybe keeping him over in Russia on loan made sense with how much of a mess the AHL season was last year, and the uncertainty in the off-season.

Really don’t get not bringing him over now, though. Hopefully they’ll do what they did with Willy during his last season in Sweden and yank him out of there after the new year at the latest.

He'd be my primary trade piece. Would much rather move him than Robertson, Sandin, Lilly, Knies, Niemela. And he probably has one of the higher trade values of the group too because he was a 1st round pick and is big and fast.

Yup. And don't forget the ol' World Juniors bump that GMs love despite having mediocre at best predictability! He should be fantastic currency mostly based on perception and not so much merit.
