Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

He went all eye testy a bunch of years ago and has a pretty terrible track record since then. Taking a look through his eye test on our prospects provides us a window into why his track record has gone to shit

- Calling Robertson's skating below NHL average is a joke.
- Knies puck skills are well above NHL average
- Ditto with Sandin

and these are super obvious to anyone who watches these guys.

I was literally just going to reply about that same issue after reading that.

I saw Sandin skating below average, and I know some or all of you feel that way here too, but I think it's nonsense. I don't agree with the criticism at all.

And then I saw Robertson skating below average and I was like, oh okay so this dude is dumb.

Sandin's skating is poor (or, "below NHL average"). He has good edges but his straight line speed and acceleration are not good. But the rest I agree with ME and LOF.

Sandin is a step slow off the line definitely, and has at best average top speed. He lives and dies by being very very smart with his positioning. It's the biggest reason I'm not super high on him, I just don't see top end physical tools there. He's a slower 5'11 180 Tomas Kaberle in most ways. I'm very interested to see what he looks like after a summer of off season training. My opinion can change quickly if he adds a somewhat explosive first step.

I dunno, I just don't see it. I've got no problem with his skating. Look how he's all over the ice and how quickly he gets from one end to the other. Completely disagree with the consensus. He's gonna be an awesome player and we're so stupid for not dumping old man Muzz and handing the reins over to Sandin now.

Well yeah, he's going to look good on the best transition sequence of his NHL career so far where his first dozen strides on that rush were out of frame.

I am somewhat annoyed at how similar our opinions are on many of our prospects, but this is a good summary of my thoughts too.

Lame cop out. From behind the net to when he caught up to the play was what, like 3 seconds? And then look at him fly when he’s in the frame. The criticism are either overblown or just groundless imo.

Lame cop out.

Except it's not. The clip doesn't show the one specific thing we've mentioned as a deficiency of his and you're forcing us to infer that it's fine based off of how long he's out of frame when the difference between him having a killer 1st step and no 1st step is a fraction of a second.

The clip literally had one job and it didn't do it.

Your only criticism is first step to top speed?

I mean, you can nitpick but the clip gives us timing from one end of the rink to the other after he just had to exert himself to make a great defensive play. Not sure what’s better than that, not really a need to see it to believe it situation when the main issue is time and not how he looks.

To me, the clip is consistent with everything I’ve seen from him so far.

He’s not a bad skater but he’s not quick.

his performance last year was undeniable though. Small guys who aren’t great skaters always get overlooked. Guys like Ellis and Girard are no different.

The bolder take was when a few of us said Lilly > Sandin.

But yeah, Sandin overtaking him is bold now. He certainly could, he's awesome.

They are both really good. Timmy was better this year, and tested a bit more but also a year older.

They were both good at both ends too. Timmy has a more well rounded skill set, but Sandin has that elite hockey IQ and is better with the puck which usually translates. He had a better microstat impact.

its not unrealistic that we are looking at two legit top of the lineup dman, but both guys need to get tested. Lots of Leafs third pair dman have killed it analytically off the back of our team offensive impact in favourable minutes every year but none of them have translated to top 4 minutes yet.

Timmy will end up being the better all around dman but Sandin will likely produce more

Sandin will initially be given more opportunity to produce with PP time and likely softer match ups or more O starts than lilli. So he better produce more
