Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

When Jacob Quillan was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent out of Quinnipiac University last night, Quinnipiac assistant coach Joe Dumais nodded his head unsurprised.

Dumais thought, “This makes sense” because he quickly compared Quillan, a sturdy and competitive centre, to a player Dumais coached against and watched closely: Bobby McMann, who has actively worked his way through the leagues all the way to being an effective depth piece for the Maple Leafs.

“Bobby could skate, compete and win battles,” Dumais said. “And Quillan is very similar in that sense. He’s not as tall as Bobby, but he’s as thick as anyone I’ve ever seen. He’s a big kid and his ability to win battles and races is really high-end.”

“(Quillan) just has it in him. He showed up with that work ethic. From day one, he was a beast in the weight room and in practice,” Dumais said. “He’s a kid that doesn’t come around too often, with the way he works every single day.”

Like McMann, the versatility in Quillan’s game is part of what made him so attractive to the Leafs. Quillan can skate well, play with pace at both centre and the wing, has the hockey IQ to skate beside skilled players higher up the lineup and the defensive acumen to be just as much of a fit in a fourth-line role.

New market inefficiency, thickkkk kids

Biggest loss there (no offence to the fans), is the additional goaltending development.

True, it was nice having an extra spot to park some of our young goalies.

They’ll have to come up with another option, and hopefully one that’s closer to the organization’s resources than Newfoundland.

Hopefully he doesn't take until he's 27 like McMann.

The Mcmann comparison is only coming up because quinnipac and Colgate (where Mcmann played) are in the same conference.

Mcmann is a crazy case. He almost played out his Jr A eligibility so he started university as an overager, and in his last season as a 24 year old went 10-10-20 in 34 gp. The fact that a sub ppg 24 year old in a 3rd tier d1 program is an nhler is rare - that the player is gonna score 15ish g im under 60 gp this year is unicorn territory.

The Cow says Moo-ve over Kampf, I'm coming for your spot on the playoff roster.

Unfortunately, Keefe ironically does not speak cow.

Still 18 until May, 10th in WHL defender scoring, listed at 6'4 200 to start the season and the frame is big, he's going to fill out.

Apparently the skating has taken a step forward this season which was the pre draft knock on him. If his skating looks even okay against AHL competition it's time to start getting a bit excited about the kid as someone with top 4 potential. Moves the puck well and intelligently without relying on carrying it. Shot is developing but has had flashes of nuclear weaponry.

Can’t wait until he’s good enough for Sheldon to bench for a plug we acquired at the trade deadline!
