Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

I wouldn't worry about it. I pay attention when I see a guy contributing on an NHL roster. This team has had so-called amazing prospects many times over the years.

When was the last time one of our top prospects busted or didn't somewhat reasonably live up to the hype? Schenn? Trusty?

Amirov was looking pretty meh I guess?

But their other two recent 1st rounders look quite excellent. And Robertson and Knies look like great picks too relative to where they were selected.

Too early, but for me it was pretty clear early on that he was underwhelming with an unexciting ceiling. We can blame the coaching all we want but the really good ones break through that even in Russia. He always seemed ok just ok.

I can't agree there....his MHL number pre draft line up well with some pretty good Russian NHL'ers and in his post draft season he scored the 9th most goals by a 19 yr old in KHL history (tied with tarasenko). Last year was disappointing of course, but if a mulligan is ever deserved....

that's kind of vague as hype and bust are subjective words, but I guess the prominent top guys recently have been Dermott, Sandin, Liljegren, and Robertson.. none of them has made much of a dent in the bigs thus far. Thus far they're okay, just okay young players.

Amirov it's hard to say at this point. Let's assume that with a healthy brain he makes the Leafs roster this year, or let's say Robertson does in his stead, as 2nd or 3rd LW. That would make 1 impact addition of the lot.

Dermott as a 2nd rounder wasn't a home run, but he was fine value there. Sandin looks fine. Liljegren grossly outperformed his draft slot last year. Robertson as a 2nd rounder still looks like a fine prospect. Same with Knies. Can one or more of these turn into home runs? Possibly, but at their ages it's impossible to have that information yet.

I get being skeptical but the bigger problem is their lack of top 15 picks in recent years too. Granted, the one they had seemed pretty mediocre from day 1 and now he has a significant illness unfortunately.

Hard for anyone to break through when they were stapled to the bench or press box. Kid was doomed the minute they knew he was out

I don't know who any of these people are but that is exciting!

Not that it's worth much, but:

Mateychuk: WHL D, 5'11, good mobility, solid 2-way guy. Good points wise in WHL, just dropped in rankings due to others passing him (Korchinski, Mintyukov). Think a cross between Dumba and Sam Girard.
Ohgren: Swedish winger...6'1, ok skater, good 2-way with some offense. Consensus Top9 guy, but ceiling has been debated. Could be a Steen or Teravainen-lite guy (50-60pt upside).
Ostlund: Swedish C, and Ohgren's C for most of the season. 5'11 and great skater. Very good against own age group, meh with SHL. Boom/bust guy...could make it as high as 2C, could be AHL fodder. William Karlsson or Eriksson-Ek type.
Mesar: Slovakian winger, 5'10, good skater but more of a perimeter guy. Probably middle-six, PP2 kinda guy. Could be a Olesz or Marco Dano type.
Rutgar McGroarty: Centre in the USHL, 6', decent skating, offense. Concern is his production didn't improve as desired from D-1 to D-year. Probably middle-6 guy, PP2. High of Jaden Schwartz, low of Keifer Bellows.

Overall, I'm hopeful for Mateychuk form that group, or Ohgren. But this is going to be a weird draft, so who knows.

It's worth a lot, ty. I've been needing a TLDR for the prospects.

Based on those descriptions alone I want Ostlund I guess.

I mean, if we're judging 21 & 22 yr old players already, that says more about this market than the players. We're entering the zone in which Leaf fans aren't allowed to get excited about anything territory here.

Want to judge Dermott, sure...but dude looks a lot like a #4-5 defender at 25 yrs old. We hyped him up as what exactly? A potential future #3ish guy? If he ends up missing, it's not going to be by a ton. It's not like we were pumping his tires and he's an AHL'er or anything. That was Percy.
