Leafs trade for Foligno

Common denominator never changes on every cup team

Your top players have to be your best players and play up to or exceed expectations

Secondary players need to chip in do their job and a Kontos , “ where the fuk did you come from “ has to emerge

Those teams you mentioned all did it that way in those 3 tiers I mentioned

"Your top players have to be good, the rest of the team has to play good too."

I mean, no fucking wonder you think you understand the secret sauce.

Tomas "legit 2nd line center" Plekanec.

Pleks played well but it was a stupid trade , Leafs were not ready to win anything

Just like giving up a second for Boyle

Those moves are not Foligno moves in a format that gives Leafs an advantage this year

Your best players never got the playoff memo , as a group underachieved every year

Losing to teams ranked higher than you 3 out of 4 years is not underachieving.

If you want to reference losing to Columbus in the fake playoffs last season, sure. But losing to championship Washington and then the elite Bruins twice in 7 game series, isn't underachieving.

Underachieving is when you lose to teams that aren't as good as you are, not when you lose to elite teams that beat you in tightly contested series.

I'm not comparing this Foligno move to the Plekanec trade.

Just taking the opportunity to make fun of zeke for calling Plekanec a 2nd line center at the time.

Though I do disagree with the idea of the Leafs "not being ready to win anything" at that point. The Leafs were a very good team that year.

Hey that was the Habs #1C there.

Plek was on the 4th line by the end of his Hab tenure....that's all the "advanced stat" you needed.

having said that, I say TRUST THE GLASSES (he wasn't in charge back then)

I really, really want to see us rest Jumbo and Spezza down the stretch man....really.

Both still have impact moments in them that the rest of our depth guys don't really have much of.

Hopefully that becomes a possibility once we're no longer trying to bank as much cap space as possible for the deadline.

Give Thornton & Spezza more time off, and rotate in any forwards you might potentially need to use as depth in the playoffs.

I haven't talked to any Leaf fans I know off-board yet, but I'd be surprised if they hated it since they're always bashing Dubas for getting "soft guys".

The reaction from the Leaf fans in my circle of friends is overwhelmingly positive, for this reason.

I think it’s the context of what else he does. If he’s quiet tomorrow and does fix goaltending, depth dman, pp assistance etc thst is more a need - then yeh, this trade sucks

Mirtle is claiming that this will be the Leafs' only major move before the deadline.

He's still leaning into the idea that it's the plan for Andersen to come back:

How the Leafs fit in Foligno’s salary

First of all, we need to be the bearer of bad news: This is likely the only major acquisition the Leafs are going to make before the trade deadline.

That becomes evident when you look at how tight the Leafs are to the salary cap after adding Foligno’s contract.

The biggest reason for that is the Frederik Andersen situation. According to multiple sources, it’s expected that at some point before the end of the season, Andersen will be back from injury – barring further setbacks with his lower-body injury.

In order to accommodate his potential return, the Leafs could not spend his long-term injured reserve money to bring in Foligno.

I think I'm just not going to believe this until the deadline has passed without us getting a goaltender.

I don't really get why we're making calls on Raanta, Ullmark, Kuemper etc as per Friedman if we know 100% that Andersen's returning.

Yeah... they can’t be 100% certain that Freddie will both be healthy and effective...so I say they will 97% add a goaltender.
