Leafs trade for Foligno

everything else aside, the Leafs have added another excellent defensive forward.

Nash, Hyman, Mikheyev, Foligno, Engvall and Kerfoot is is a pretty strong checking group and should support our scoring lines well.

Our PK should get better simply because we have Jack in goal, but it's still only 20th right now and the two new guys should be big additions in that department.

You think that objectively speaking Fred is literally done as an nhler?

Not sure why that needs to be the case here. But right now he's a) not good b) has a mysterious injury c) would be backing up someone who is battling an injury.

The only negatives to this addition are the acquisition cost and the opportunity cost.

On the first one, I kinda get how we’d have to give up a 1st. Our 1st is really a 2nd. And who gives a shit about 4ths when we have a stocked system and Dubie gets them for free when he traded down.

On the opportunity cost, it’d be a shame if Hall could be had for cheap and we let him go to a Boston or TB. If the assets we just have up don’t stand in the way of it, get him.

I could agree with the point Zeke is hinting at, ie. that Freddie may well not be done.

Howevah: this isn't the same bunch of skill-upside kids who lost to Boston a couple of years ago. This is a legit Stanley Cup contender. And Dubas job may be on the line this time.

How in the FU.CK can you possibly go into the playoffs with this group of goaltenders:

1. Jack Campbell - playing great, but still a career backup who's always questionable to be healthy enough to suit up
2. Freddie Andersen - poor stats for 2 straight years, questionable attitude, currently out of the lineup indefinitely with either a groin injury or mental health issues
3. Michael Hutchinson - potential ECHL MVP

you absolutely can't depend on Campbell, who is obviously still hurting.

you cannot gamble this season on him.

to come this far only to see Hutch in the net in a playoff series would be absurd.

Kind of weird the contrarian flip-flop you've made on Fred recently.

Do we really need to re-litigate this? Sure he's an NHL goalie, but he's been a below average one for a while now and an awful one this season, he'll be coming off a lengthy absence (which isn't his strong suit) and even at his best he's killed this team in the playoffs with his ill-timed bad play and soft goals.

So even if he's not "done" as an NHL goalie, he's not the goalie I want in our net in the playoffs if Jack's injury flares up. And I especially don't see the sense in dedicating $5M of our cap space to him.

There’s no way Dubie’s job is on the line with the goaltending. He’s coasting into the playoffs with a goalie who hasn’t even lost a game yet and with his starter as his backup. There’s no fireable offense there.

I’m sure he’s trying to add another goalie. If he doesn’t, I won’t blame him.

Rumoured groin issue that nobody anywhere has wanted to put their name on.

Honestly, either of the possible offered explanations for what Fred's injury could be - groin or mental health - would have me getting some sort of goalie insurance right now. Too big of a risk.

As a good or even average one? Yeah.

I'm sure he can be a bad backup for a few more years though if he really wants to. But he'll get contracts on reputation rather than performance.

I mean, are Greiss, Brian Elliott, Rinnie, Dubnyk or Jon Quick NHL goalies moving forward? Those are Fred's contemporaries in age/performance these days.

My guess is somebody is added but it might not be an upgrade of healthy Freddy.

No flip flop.

I never thought he was great, and I doubt he's toast now.

I mean none of the names being bandied about inspire any kind of confidence if they have to start in the playoffs.

As far as backups go, I'd think if he was on another team you guys would be looking at him as a good option.

Even aside from all the other reasons I’ve gone through, any goalie on any team who’s posted a sub .900 SV% this season (and for over a calendar year) would not be looked on as a “good option” by me.

Absolutely no idea what you’re talking about there.

And I still haven’t seen any rationalization for why this guy is a good use of $5M in cap space this season.

"Are the Leafs' pants too long?"

There’s a chance last season’s playoff disappointment has pushed Dubas and company too far in one direction. That the 2020 playoffs, and all the drama that came before it, convinced management their roster was lacking precisely the ingredient players like Foligno could offer. And that they went too far with it and won’t have the juice for a deep playoff run.

I was ok with the deal (playoffs, Leafs up 3-2 on Tampa, 3rd period, Foligno FTW) till this.
