The choice of candidate is interesting, and also that this is another prominent Liberal minister from the Trudeau era that’s being shuffled out of parliament and into a new job (Blair’s being appointed as our high commissioner to the UK).

Not sure if this is Carney preparing for another general election, or just getting some of his hand-picked new blood into parliament via safe seats occupied by longtime Trudeau MP’s that are ready to move on.

TLDR: American sledder tried to game the rules by competing against lesser competition to gain enough points to take the olympic spot of a sledder who competed against world class competition all season. The Canadians noticed this was on going and removed their sledders from a lower tier competition so that winning it counted for fewer points, and that would keep this particular sledder from beating out the more deserving American sledder for the olympic team.

Canada has no interest in acquiring nuclear weapons, Defence Minister says​


Canada’s Defence Minister says the Carney government has no interest in acquiring nuclear weapons as Western countries grapple with whether to develop such a deterrent.

Retired general Wayne Eyre, the country’s former top soldier, told an Ottawa defence forum on Monday that while he doesn’t advocate incorporating such weapons into the country’s arsenal, Canada should “keep our options open.”

Defence Minister David McGuinty, however, said Tuesday the Liberal government will stick to rearming Canada with more conventional weapons.

“Canada has absolutely no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons,” he told reporters.

“Canada has been a non-nuclear proliferation state for a long time,” Mr. McGuinty said.

Prime Minister Mark Carney last year injected more than $84-billion into Department of National Defence to be spent over a half decade. It’s believed to be the biggest short-term cash infusion for the military since the Korean War.

The new spending, which helps Canada meet a higher NATO spending target, will fund pay raises, precision-strike capabilities, upgrades to aging infrastructure and cyberdefences, among other things.

Mr. McGuinty said Canada plans to rebuild and rearm its military, but not in a way that contravenes the international treaty.

I sincerely hope this is just what they’re saying for public consumption, so as not to alarm the orange pants-shitting baboon to the South of us until Canada’s possession of nuclear weapons is already a fait accompli.

Otherwise, this is dumb as fuck. Trump may be a chickenshit would-be conqueror, but there’s no way of guaranteeing that whoever comes next in that shit-show will be. And nuclear arms are the only effective guarantor of territorial sovereignty in the current era.

Honestly, nothing would get us invaded faster than a nuclear weapons program. There's a 0% chance the US allows nuclear weapons in this hemisphere that they're not in full control of. It's a non starter. A robust as fuck drone and reserve program is a way better deterrent than a nuke.

Personally, I’m not comfortable giving the biggest threat to this country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity a veto over which weapons systems we are and aren’t “allowed” to have.
