New Canadian Politics Thread

As expected the roll out of the new CRB to replace CERB is a complete shit show.

Nobody is able to apply because it keeps saying they have already applied for all eligible periods. Even though this is the first day its open.

And its a holiday so there is nobody to call.

It's amazing they didn't charge anyone. White supremacists who have beaten and killed many natives -- set up to fuck over the native peoples.

I'm surprised this is going on in NS, as my encounters there, even in rural areas, have been nicely tolerant people including a lobster fishermen I know and have been friends with going back over 20 years.

the violence was sadly predictable, tensions have been rising here for weeks since the Sipekne'katik started their fishery. Intimidation, traps being cut, a boat being burned, all happened prior to this without any meaningful response.

at this point I consider the RCMP complicit too - their response has probably been the most galling part of it all. took them over two hours to even respond to the initial call, and they then forced a fisherman out of the warehouse to allow the 'protesters' (i.e. racist dickwads) to trash the place (idiots didn't even realize it was not an exclusively Mi'kmaq operation).

I'm actually quite angry about this as there is simply no reason it needs to happen and the authorities have allowed the situation to spiral.

sadly once the commercial season opens in November I foresee retaliation. then magically the RCMP will be able to make some arrests I suspect.

on the one hand, retaliation is unhelpful and will likely set back efforts to resolve this. on the other hand, can you really blame anyone who does?

It would not surprise me to see retaliation but you can be 100% sure even if there's peaceful protests pushing back the RCMP will assault the Mi’kmaw.

The RCMP are just dying tor the Mi'kmaq to fight back. Then there will be, what they like to call, a "riot".

On media bias ...

The Mi'kmaq, they have a right. The Supreme Court of Canada decided in the Marshall decision that they agree, yes, the Mi'kmaq have a treaty right to make a living from fishing and hunting and gathering. They came out with the term "moderate livelihood," didn't define it, so it's a little confusing. But they upheld that treaty right.

And so the problem is, is that when we call it an illegal fishery, that's only because the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has not implemented their own law, like they haven't addressed the Marshall decision to date. So there are no rules to govern a moderate livelihood fishery. And so in the eyes of DFO, it might be an illegal fishery, but in fact, the Mi'kmaq have a legal right, a constitutional right to go fish and make a living.
