I mean, I'm front of the line when it comes to willingness to discuss why having nazi sympathies in 1930's-40's Ukraine was a bit fucking different than most other places given the multiple attrocities the Soviet's committed against the Ukrainian people that were still pretty recent memory at the time.

So while I think we should be able to accept that someone who ended up on the Nazi team in Ukraine during WW2 might not deserve full fledged Nazi status (though some of those motherfuckers definitely do, there were definitely some Ukie units that were into that shit wholeheartedly up to and including being active participants of the holocaust)....we definitely shouldn't be celebrating the motherfuckers are war heroes decades later.

This is one of the biggest, stupidest own goals I've seen in international politics, ever.

hey my nonno was technically fought for the nazis. not that he knew what the fuck any of it was about. applauding him wouldn't have been applauding a nazi.

but yeah, it's insanely dumb.

The worst part is that it’s not just an own goal that hurts the Libs.

They also managed to hurt Zelensky and Ukraine by turning his visit into a story that feeds into all of the Ukraine = Nazi shit the Russians and their tankies relentlessly push to discredit Ukraine.

History in that part of the world during WW2 is definitely messy as fuck.

There are plenty of people in Ukraine, Finland & the Baltics that ended up on “Team Nazi” because they were their only available ally against the Soviet Union, which was just the latest “Malibu Stacy: with a new hat!” version of the Imperial Russian state that had been actively subjugating, colonizing & ethnically cleansing their nations for centuries and was still actively looking to continue that policy under its new Bolshevik leadership.

Though it sure seems like this dude was part of a unit that cooperated more fully with the Nazis and enthusiastically helped out with their atrocities against favourite Nazi targets. And those people, of course, can fuck right off.

Yep.

Even if he wasn't though, I don't know if I'd be parading someone who fought for Nazi germany around as a war hero in 2023.

But yeah, to make matters worse it sounds like the unit this guy was in happened to be one of those full throated Nazi units that was down for whatever.
 
yeah, we can definitely understand there were complexities involved, but it's still an idiotic own goal to venerate a member of the Waffen-SS for fighting against our allies in the fucking war.
 
I just despise that people can’t make sincere mistakes…..if there was any evidence he knew, that’s one thing, but it’s pretty clear where his intentions were imo.

tried to do a good thing, blew up in his face…everyone wishes he’d done the proper vetting, no one more than himself.

congrats to the conservatives who’ll make a mountain out of it, instead of debating legitimate issues, you got a freebie…..enjoy it dickweasels, you’re the ones intentionally looking to ruin a man’s career just for your own benefit, despite knowing how simple & meaningless a mistake it ultimately was.
