History in that part of the world during WW2 is definitely messy as fuck.

There are plenty of people in Ukraine, Finland & the Baltics that ended up on “Team Nazi” because they were their only available ally against the Soviet Union, which was just the latest “Malibu Stacy: with a new hat!” version of the Imperial Russian state that had been actively subjugating, colonizing & ethnically cleansing their nations for centuries and was still actively looking to continue that policy under its new Bolshevik leadership.

Though it sure seems like this dude was part of a unit that cooperated more fully with the Nazis and enthusiastically helped out with their atrocities against favourite Nazi targets. And those people, of course, can fuck right off.

I encourage everyone to read Timothy Snyder's excellent book "Bloodlands: Eastern Europe between Hitler and Stalin" for context.

Between 1933 and 1945, approximately 14 million Eastern Europeans were murdered by either the Soviets or the Nazis. Millions more were deported, imprisoned, starved and tortured but survived. The Soviets fucked over the Ukraine first, so when Germany went to war against the USSR in 1941, a lot of Ukrainians were only too happy to treat the Germans as liberators and volunteer to help them kill Russian orcs. It should also be noted that antisemitism was (and remains) a big thing in that region of the globe thanks mostly to the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches fomenting it. Anti-Jewish sentiment was extremely overt in Eastern Europe and got subtler as you moved west but it didn't disappear entirely. Even in North America it was rampant. McGill University had an unwritten but widely acknowledged quota on the number of Jewish students it would admit, and many hotels, resorts and rental apartments in many North American locales were closed to Jews. Unlike Eastern Europe, where a storefront might have a sign reading "No Jews", in North America it would simply say "Gentiles Only" or the more euphemistic "Restricted".

All of which is to say that it's not a shocker that a lot of Ukrainians threw in their lot with the Germans as "Nazis of convenience" in order to oust the Soviets. But this particular guy was a volunteer for an SS unit that targeted Jews as much as Soviet soldiers so he's probably an asshole. The problem for me is the hypocrisy of Poilievre in Question Period calling this the most egregious scandal in Canadian history. This is bullshit on two levels. One, it isn't worse than a litany of scandals committed under Harper (robocalls, Afghan detainees, proroguing Parliament to avoid questions and a non-confidence vote on the detainees issue, being found in contempt of Parliament, yada, yada, yada) Secondly, he is trying to convince people that he gives a shit about Nazis in the House of Commons when he clearly doesn't. First of all, he has at least three of them sitting in Parliament right now; the ones who had lunch and photo ops with Christine Anderson. And unlike this old fart on Friday, the MP's knew who and what Anderson is before they met with her, not after the fact. Also, fascists make up a lot of Poilievre's base so him pretending that he thinks Nazis are bad is comical. He can't get elected without them.

Yes it was an honest mistake, but as Speaker of the House he has a high standard to meet and resigning is the right thing for him to do. Of course you're right in assuming that the Cons won't leave it at that because it's going to allow them to dunk on Trudeau for at least a week.

The most difficult job of any CPC leader since the party was formed is keeping the bozo eruptions in check and not having lunatic, hard-right/social conservative candidates from northern Ontario or out West scare off the normies by saying the quiet parts out loud.

So, that’s something to hope for. Something else is the tendency of left-wing voters coalescing around one party if the election is close and the CPC is ascendant.

The other thing will be the near-impossible task for Poilievre to win the confidence of the house and/or enact his agenda if they only have a minority government. Every other party that’ll win seats will be left of center, so they have no natural allies.
