New Canadian Politics Thread

When the world is proliferated with those little interceptor drone motherfuckers, I honestly don't see how offensive war even works anymore.

Even the old concept of air dominance isn't about being able to literally control all of the territory you can fly over unimpeded by air defence. Now you need to control the air by altitude envelope. If you don't control from 0-2000ft you don't fucking control anything, I don't care how many F-35's you have from 2000-40000. How do you walk expensive equipment or squishy/essplodey human meat bags (who are also expensive to train, and difficult to replace) into an area the enemy can defend with interceptor drone? Attack helicopters, also, are fucking over.

I imagine the Americans probably could still execute an offensive war against a prepared opposition over relatively favourable terrain if they were willing to 1) kill civilians on a level they haven't since WW2 (and even during WW2, didn't have nearly the same stomache for it as the Brits) & 2) willing to eat Vietnam level casualties or worse, something they don't really have the political willingness to do anymore.

It's getting harder and harder to make a particularly long list of what 80/90's style fighter jets are good for, exactly.

They do have some uses still, but whenever I hear about all the money we're going to sink into F-35's or one of the European choices, I can't help but wonder if that'll end up being the equivalent of investing heavily in a battleship fleet in the lead-up to World War 2.

They will just spend their money on anti-drone drones. Or maybe automated ground machines that shoot lasers or something.

Or targeted emp devices.

With enough money and brain power, you can overcome these obstacles. But it takes time and foresight, something MAGA and stupid America doesn't have.

But everything you just mentioned are defensive weapons by nature.

Anything expensive on the ground will be scrap for very cheap, just throw enough drones at it and eventually you'll overwhelm defences. One fairly poor country, in the middle of a war with an adversary 4x the size has built an industry from the ground up and is pumping out 7 million fpv drones a year. Interceptor drones capable of 300kmh cost $1000 each and Ukraine is pumping out 2,000 a day. What happens when these things really hit industrial scale production?

Their limitations are going to be range, which again makes them inherently defensive weapons. You're not taking over another country with these things, but you're definitely able to stop just about anyone from taking you over if you produce them at scale.
