New Waiver Rules

There is definitely an advantage to hearing news first on a player and being able to go add him before anyone else does.

Maybe if we have a separate process for claiming newly signed or undrafted players while allowing normal claims on regular bench players. Not sure how it would look or if that makes sense lol.

Are we just trying to fix something that wasnt broken?

If someone wants to spend a couple hours going over every NCAA and KHL team to try and find FA prospects then why not allow them to just make the pickup.
In the same order of idea, teams only have 25 minors prospect pools and now the majority of GMs are looking to drop prospects to be able to fit the ones recently drafted.

It’s not like any team has the space to add 4 or 5 NCAA prospects.

I think it’s part of the game.

And I would stay away from anything overly complicated.

I thought undrafted free agents had to go through the draft anyway, like Lehtonen.

This just adds more flexibility to add them outside of the draft.

A player like Lethonen is available to be drafted on his draft year.

And then if he goes undrafted, he moves to the Free Agent pool and is free game.

Now this rule would not even affect a team taking a player like Lethonen once he’s been signed by the Leafs because the signing happens in the offseason when Free Agents pick-up is unavailable in our league.

Same thing with Jiri Sekac a few years ago.
Signed by Montreal on July 1st.
In FI Dynasty League, you can’t add the player on July 1st.

You have to wait at the Draft to get you’re first opportunity to pick him like Garden Gnomes did this year.

If nobody drafts him from the FA pool he goes through the Post-Draft Waivers where every team can claim him before he truly becomes free game once again.

It’s a non-issue really.

The only thing is a GM could claim Sekac/Lethonen prior to the end of the season, prior to him being signed by an NHL team, because maybe you read rumors, or maybe you’re so smart that you predicted the guy will get an NHL contract before he actually does.

If that’s the case, then by all means the GM who make such a move and liberate a spot on his minors for an undrafted/unsigned KHL players deserves to get the player !

I got undrafted CHL overagers Nico Daws and Pavel Gogolev in my minors last season because I though they would get draft this year. I hit on Daws, and missed on Gogolev.

I had to make space on my roster for those gambles.

Don’t take that away from this league.

Wasn't it a rule at one point that the undrafted/KHL/college players could only be picked up during the draft?

Yeah, I thought that was the rule too. All those guys went through the draft (Panarin/Mikheyev/Lehtonen/Shipachev).

I think it's a competitive balance thing, much like the actual NHL (except we don't have a salary cap). The top teams trade all of their high picks and prospects for competitive players and then fill their prospect pools from FA with guys who are certainly boom/bust, but more often older and likely to get an NHL shot before a 19 year-old kid.

So what if waivers is set for 6 days a week? I.E, they start after the roster lock time on Monday and finish on Sunday sometime? Would mostly serve the goal we're shooting for, but gives managers flexibility to fix a lineup.

are you free to add players via free agency in the time between? or would any claims you want to make carry over to next sunday?

Yeah the time between the players coming off waivers, says Sunday at noon and re-entering Monday at 7pm would be the FA period where you could add players at will to address short term roster issues.

At the end of the day I'd rather re-institute this rule, than change the waivers system. I'm open to whatever will work best. But we do need to decide soon.

What do you guys think is the best option?

Really good discussion here guys. I've put up a poll. Again needs 10 vote majority to be implemented.

Like I said in the poll thread, gotta think on it a bit. Pros and cons type deal.
