No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

coach says holmberg at C tonight. we don't know lines but i'm guessing he goes between willy and knies. This is a big opportunity for him - he's been complete ass this year but i still think there could be something there, and this is by far the best pair of wingers he's got to play with.....maybe ever. Here's his chance. Maybe his last chance with minten and grebs knocking on the door.

A Robertson-Minten-Grebenkin line could be fun too.

Also says Benoit is in and Hakanpaa out. Hak didn't play much in the 2nd half of last game i wonder if his knee is barking already.

Really does seem like Holmberg’s last chance. The 3C job was handed to him on a silver platter out of training camp, but he hasn’t successfully grabbed it.

Now Minten’s getting a chance to audition for that job while Holmes gets what’s likely a brief, one-off opportunity to move to the second line.

I’m not too worried about losing him on waivers. Who is going to take a guy that has 0 goals in 20 games and is bad at hockey.

And if someone does, who cares?

At this point, if someone claims him, you thank them for clearing up a contract slot for you and move on.

question is whether management would care. coach liked him quite a bit in camp.

but he's been so bad so far that he might have past their caring threshhold.

McMann - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Holmberg - Nylander
Grebeyonkin - Minten - Robertson
Dewar - Lorentz - Steeves

Rielly - OEL
McCabe - Tanev
Benoit - Timmins

Nobody will care until he pots 20 next year with the new team

I'm usually at or near the top of the list of whingers when this happens, but my biggest issue is when they don't get given a real opportunity here in a role suited for their ability. Pontus is 25, has played 108 games here and has been given extended shots to stick as the 3C here and overall hasn't done well in those spots.

With that said, I'd much prefer we had a good 3C, jettisoned Kampf and rolled with Pontus as the dedicated 4C until the deadline to really see if he can handle a role for us....but if we lost him on waivers this year and he went on to figure it out elsewhere, it would be tough to get too upset about it. 6th round pick given 100+ games and struggled like a motherfucker to handle a 3rd line role in his 3rd season? Is what it is at that point.

... and if you are not willing/able to give a young player 3 seasons to develop/mature at the NHL level, you deserve to lose them IMO. It's a process, and requires a coach willing to ease a player into tough minutes.

That said, Holmberg is struggling this season based on his previous 2 - but I wouldn't say he is actively hurting the team.

I generally agree, I just think that we need to have a conversation about what "young" is. Holmberg turns 26 in March. He played well enough last season to earn some rope imo, but he might just be a good 4th liner who can play up the lineup in a pinch. This dinosaur ass organization though seems intent on running no skill 4th lines, so he probably needs to stick as a 3rd liner.

Whats his upside? I'm not too hopeful about him becoming a 20 goal top 6 winger, or a center at all. And I think I would say he has been actively hurting this year.

Holmberg-Reaves-Kampf have all been pretty horrible (you can add Domi and Robbie too, but at least they have upside) and replacing them with Greboyking-Minten-Steeves could be quite a big upgrade. We will get to see now.

This may have something to do with it since he's played with them a lot (almost always?).

No matter what Holmberg is, you flush those two turds and their contract first. Holmberg certainly shouldn't be the first to go. Bury Reaves and Kampf on the Marlies if you have to.

Worst Forwards in the leagueL:

Doms Model
17. Holmberg
19. Reaves
54. Kampf
96. Robertson
106. Domi

EV - xGAR
6. Domi
29. Holmberg
117. Kampf
138. Reaves

The thing is that the Lorentz-Kampf-Reaves combo have actually been a solid 4th line this year. 51.9xgf% and even in goals for/against. In not tissue-soft usage. Kampf too expensive for that duty of course but they've been a solid unit....and Kampf has also stunk when moved up into 3rd line usage.

The 3rd line combos have been mostly disastrous. And even the 4th line has looked way worse with holmberg on it.

A number of leafs forwards have been weak this year (domi, robby, kampf, reaves, dewar) but it was only holmberg and mcmann that had been absolutely awful......but McMann has turned that around nicely lately, while Holmberg has stayed stuck in mud.

you know maybe i take some of that back. there have been some combos that have worked for holmberg. even with him at C.

Holmberg combos in order of minutes played:

3rd lines

McMann-Holmberg-Robby: 20min, 46.7xgf%, 50.0gf%
McMann-Holmberg/Domi: 20min, 61.2xgf%, 50.0gf% <--- don't rightly know which of holmberg or domi was playing C here
Patches-Holmberg-Robby: 15min, 58.1xgf%, 100.0gf%
Holmberg-Tavares-Robby: 15min, 20.2xgf%, 00.0gf%
Holmberg-Kampf-Steeves: 11min, 18.5xgf%, 50.0gf%

4th lines

Lorentz-Kampf-Holmberg: 14min, 50.9xgf%, 00.0gf%
Holmberg-Kampf-Reaves: 11min, 83.1xgf%, 50.0gf%
Lorentz-Holmberg-Reaves; 8min, 3.6xgf%, 00.0gf%
