No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

I would love to see Mitch on line 3 with Laughton and Robertson/patches/Jarnkrok

It becomes a defensively sound and Mitch could spark some offensive with a Laughton type or the other wingers.

JT Willy and Mcmann can also work.
Domi can facilitate good enough to replace Mitch, but he also can shoot as well.

Spread it out with Mitch on line 3

It doesn't matter how you condense or spread the talent if the gameplan is going to be to continually skate to centre ice, bang it into their end and expect Marner, Nylander, Domi, Robertson, Holmberg, & Jarnkrok to be the top 9 type wingers who are going to go get it. The only wingers we have who own the speed and size you need to play that style well are Knies and McMann.

We give away possession for cheap, on purpose, and then send small skilled players to go fight along the walls to get it back. Truly shocking that the puck goes the other way with speed regularly.

If Matthews was shooting to score Ike he was last year when it worked. I want another guy who can be a finisher with Matthews until recovery from whatver injury this is he is going through.

imo unless robby ups his game bigly then Domi's upside is much higher than robby's these playoffs, and matthews is the perfect partner for domi both offensively and defensively. Domi can put up legit high-end 1st line caliber numbers playing with matthews, and as last game showed Domi is just naturally a big game / playoffs type.

Funny how whether it’s Babcock, Keefe or Berube, if one of the big-4 gets put on the third line, it’s always Willy. Never Mitch.

this is my preference tbh - mitch is better defensively than willy so can really help tavares there.

In general this is the setup i like best - with the full awareness that when games get tight in certain situation you can go back to stacking the lines again if need be.

I'm interested in seeing who actually plays C in the dzone on that 3rd line though - Laughton or Krok.

Rather try Marner and Domi together again. Small sample size last year - they looked great from the eye test.

Give Robbie a real chance to play with high end players that will get him the puck in shooting areas. We don’t know how we would look and it’s dumb to not try a guy that has the potential like he has to finish plays. Matthews can help Robbie on the defensive side. Ditto for Domi with Marner.

What's he supposed to say though? If we just dump and chase a bit harder, the results will come?
What he said isn't a problem, per say. It was honest. But it points to the broader issue of this team being little bitches that lack killer instinct. Effort shouldn't be negotiable or conditional on how hard the other team is trying. And they shouldn't have to "wrap their heads around" other teams trying super hard. You're supposed to be in a divisional race. Maybe try hard no matter what?

imo the issue is that there is a very narrow set of acceptable responses that all boil down to "grind harder" when asked this type of a question after a string of bad results. He's stuck explaining why a fairly poorly constructed team that plays bad hockey is getting bad results.
