I'm a big fan of getting good players. And Carlo is really good. And youngish, something leafs don't really have back there.

Between OEL and Reilly, there probably isn't enough offense there for the entire dcorps so it's for sure not ideal. And I'm not very interested in one dimensional d who suck balls defensively. The ideal scenario is they find a guy they don't have to shelter that's elite or borderline elite offensively. Almost every elite team has one of them.

McCabe is underrated at pushing the pace and driving offense, but yeah not quite that guy!

Imo the key unlock is to replace rielly with somebody who’s better. He’s just not a #1 guy. Hopefully Carlo helps get us playof rielly but I’m not optimistic this year.

Last 3yrs dman playoffs 5v5 scoring (avg of p/60 and p1/60), min 250min

16. Slavin: 40gms, 0.88ap/60 - 18:44

yeah it's pretty funny what Carlo has done in the playoffs. I've decided to italicize the guys who only got borderline top-4 minutes here tho. Probably shouldn't include them tbh.

I mean every stat indicates that. They clearly needed an offensive d more than Carlo.

I mean kinda but not only. We really did need someone other than Mccabe/Tanev that we could trust to anchor a pair defensively without being sheltered imo. It's too bad Carlo has less offense than pretty much anyone tho.

I do think the top-5 D all slot really well into their roles now. Rielly has shortcircuited offensively this year but he was great offensively last year and is almost always great offensively in the playoffs so i'm pretty confident his offense will be there. McCabe and OEL are nicely productive at 5v5 too. Even Tanev has good 5v5 production for a defensive specialist. Carlo has no offense but it should be fine to carry one guy with no offense.

I think the real problem is that Benoit is also terrible defensively in addition to being useless offensively. For a dcorps that already lacks offense, using the last spot on an even more useless guy offensively for no real reason is a bit of a killer. Timmins would have been a nice option there. Villenueve might be too. Heck even Hakanpaa has a decent amount of offense in his career. I wish Benoit was actually good defensively but he's terrible.

Carlo is just ok. He’s been our #5 dman since Tanev is back. Not sure he moves the needle a whole lot.

It is kinda nuts we gave up a 1st and a top
Prospect for a dman we’re playing 17 mins a game.

Nah he’s a legit top 4 tough minutes d. And they got him for 2+ years. That’s a good use of a first.

These are the dmen that were traded this year:

NameReturncontract5v5 TOI (since deadline)QoC Off w new teamDOMS
Jake Walman1st2 * $3.416:251.610
Marcus Petterssen1st1 * $417:141.937

Brandon Carlo1st + Minten3 * $3.515:500.97-2
Luke Schenn2nd + 5th2 * $2.515:241.91-2
Ryan Lindgren2nd + 5th1 * $2.516:490.65-4
Brian Dumolin2nd1 * $1.5816:551.47-4
Cody Ceci+ Grandlund for 1st1 * 43.2517:331.86-6

They really aren't using him like a shut down top 4 dman. He is not getting the minutes and he is getting relatively easy matchups, as he mostly plays with Mo (1.12) and Benoit (0.61) who they hide from top lines.

The most surprising things about the Leafs D usage are:

1. how much they have been playing OEL. His QoC is 1.6 and he leads the team in 5v5 TOI/g since the deadline. At some point recently his and Mo's 5v5 TOI flipped.
2. Tanev gets really tough matchups, but very limited minutes (15:47 since the deadline). Tanev is your best dman. Hopefully they just don't wan him blocking regular season shots against 3rd lines and will play him a lot more in the playoffs.

Wish you could get the doms with the new team. Carlo has improved from a -4 to a -2 since the trade which means he's probably significantly positive as a leaf.

But we all know what the role is - OEL is on the bottom pair but takes some ozone draws in place of both Tanev and Carlo. I don't know quite how to describe the dman roles by number tho. Technically you could call OEL our #1 dman or a bottom pair dman.

In the 10gms they've played together:

5v5

OEL 18:35 (-5.9dzs%), 43.9xgf%, 50.6gf%
Rielly 18:04 (-9.9dzs%), 60.5xgf%, 56.9gf%
McCabe 17:29 (+10.7dzs%), 57.1xgf%, 60.9gf%
Carlo 15:51 (+1.7dzs%), 57.5xgf%, 60.5gf%
Tanev 15:37 (+15.9dzs%), 49.8xgf%, 51.6gf%
Benoit 13:33 (+3.0dzs%), 41.0xgf%, 57.7gf%

The Rielly-Carlo pairing has been the most used pairing in those 10gms, and has a 61.3xgf%.

I like that roving mentality because OEL looks good in the offensive zone.
I really would like to see Myers get in for Benoit a bit....just to keep people on their proper side.

And as has been mentioned, Mo plays best with Carlo types. And quite frankly, this is the first time they aimed high and got a realgud one. I have zero complaints there, as long as Rielly is on the roster. Better Carlo than boosh or Schitt.

Carlo doesn’t necessarily have to play tough matchup minutes to be valuable. If he can deliver positive results while acting as Rielly’s babysitter, that’d be great.

He’s also important to have in the event something happens to Tanev. Remember the days when Muzzin would go down in the playoffs and we’d be proper fucked since we had nobody even remotely capable of filling his shoes?

I'd assume come playoffs that OEL's time comes down a bit and he leans heavier on the top 2 pairings. I still think Benoit's in there mostly due to the PK, and to be fair it looks like the Benoit-Carlo pairing has done well on the PK. Though i highly doubt OEL would be any worse there.

but in general the Carlo trade really has given us two legit stable pairings for the first time all year. i have to be happy with that.
