OT: American Politics

Stop fighting the culture war, and start fighting the class war. The right won because they've co opted victims of the class war who convinced themselves "oh, those crazy fucks aren't talking about me, I'm one of the good ones".
Absolutely has to be part of the argument. You have to get to listen first, though. Newsom spars with Hannity all the time, he enjoys this shit and he's good at it too. (generally speaking, i haven't listened to these podcasts)

Was there any point in the interview where you thought hm this is good, this is convincing for Gavin? Or is it what it seemed like?

The clips people are talking about seem... pretty ungood.
I think more young libs listened to that then many of the right wing podcasts out there.

I think a good percentage of them became more conservative after watching that. So yeah. Pretty damaging.

Dougie called off his surcharge to meet with this guy whose still saying shit like this.

hopefully someone makes this dummy aware that its a big 90% no from Canada. Stop with this dumb shit. Of course, if you're a leader in the Trump Administration at this point it's only because you're a subserviant dumb shit, so what else can we really expect...

Ah, damn. All the clips I've seen is just him chuckling when they say anything batshit.

And not everyone is going to listen to the full interview - they're going to get these clips on X too.

I genuinely don't think it's anything more than Gavin trying to take a page out of the right wing playbook by having a left wing podcast and having open conversations with people with different viewpoints. He thinks the Dems need more of this kind of thing, and he touches on that with Charlie.

Unfortunately, he's bad at it.

I highly doubt it. Of course, we'll see what happens.

One thing that seems to happen a lot is that people really enjoy gravitating to the opposition. So when Biden was in power, right wing podcasts dominated the top 10. It seemed really bleak just a few months ago. But now that Trump is in power, MeidasTouch has the top-rated political podcast. I saw one of their videos recently with a couple million views and it just went up that morning.

It could (at least in theory) be why Newsom is launching a podcast now. Of course he wants to be successful, but hopefully he does talk about progressive ideas and gets a lot of listeners while doing so.

Hopefully it's as harmless as that.

imo what we need is "Rogan" but what Rogan started out as. Famous guy brings on interesting people to talk about the things they're really good at. They don't need to find common ground with nazis. They need to provide information, context and solutions to the problems people are living with, that pushed them in the direction of Trump populism. Democrats are afraid of that though, because the solutions make their donors nervous.

Is there not actually conservative guests that would be just as big name/interesting who don't do nazi salutes or organize coups?

Or are we actually just saying they're all that batshit now.

Just be "Rogan". On monday bring Mike Tyson in and ask him about his experience with DMT and sensory depravation. On Tuesday it's Piketty talking about wealth inequality. Wednesday Mike Myers is going to tell stories about the time he did something with his nipple on the set of Austin Powers. Thursday Alex Honnold. Friday Bernie Sanders.

I’ve already said “what game”.

I think that, like others before him—for example, Elon Musk, Joe Rogan or even fucking Trump himself—Newsome’s decided that the easiest path forward towards increasing his own power and influence is to reject progressive politics & empirical reality and fully embrace the world of far-right populism and disinformation.

That’s the only plausible reason I can see for someone as smart and politically savvy as Newsome to sit down, yuk it up and find common ground with complete monsters like Kirk and Bannon. These are his first steps down that path.

You’re free to disagree or think I’m reading too much into this, but we’ll see how this plays out. If I’m recalling correctly, you were Joe Rogan’s last, strongest defender when some of us warned you a few years back that he was heading down this same path.
As you said, we'll see what happens. I find this extremely hard to believe, though. Just because he launched a podcast and interviewed a couple of conservatives, that's a gazillion degrees away from suddenly going far-right.

And I defended Rogan's right to interview a couple of guys with alternate views on covid on his own show, especially considering he was talking about interviewing regular virologists as well. Of course as we all know he lost his fucking mind over covid, and as soon as he started venturing into politics and saying incredibly stupid shit about it I had to bail. And if we thought he had lost his mind then, it got a million times more batshit crazy since.

I'm not saying Gavin isn't right. But that doesn't have to mean he's the right guy to start the podcast or that he'd be good at it.

A good portion of the interview was Charlie and Gavin bonding and laughing at how shit the Dems are and Gavin asking for advice on how to win elections like a little bitch. As if they haven't won 2 of the last 4 elections. Just came off as weak and pathetic and made the entire party look pretty bad and gave the illusion of the gop being this well put together, professional party with great, progressive ideas.

At some point, we need to draw a line in the sand and cut off any further discussions—or even diplomatic relations period—until Trump and his cabinet stop with the unceasing threats to Canada’s sovereignty.

There’s simply no common ground to build on if they don’t recognize our country’s right to exist and the overwhelming opposition of its people to American annexation.

And look at that fucking Quisling piece of shit O’Leary sitting there with that shit-eating grin through all that. Fuck that traitorous piece of garbage so hard.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree on your first point. Again, I simply don’t think it’s accurate to characterize Bannon and Kirk as “just a couple of Conservatives”.

But yeah—I sincerely hope I’m wrong on where Newsome is headed, and that you get the opportunity to tell me “I told you so”.

I think as long as the framing is "is it so bad to invite a couple conservatives on his podcast?" or "is he a villain for talking to anyone who voted conservative once" then yeah, we're never going to see eye to eye so I'll leave this alone for now and let it play out.
