OT: American Politics

If the idiots just really loved tariffs and wanted to use tariffs effectively, to do the things that they're actually good at, I'd just roll my eyes and keep it moving.

But the broader you make a tariff, the less it means to the countries you're threatening them with. If you threaten Canada with a 50% tariff on aluminum, that's a serious economic threat...because the threat is that our aluminum will be more expensive compared to China, India, Russia, etc and American buyers will switch from Canadian aluminum to a cheaper supply.

But....if you threaten everyone with a 50% tariff, all that you're threatening is to make the cost of aluminum go up in the US. That's it. If you tariff the entire international supply of whatever, the only punishment for the producer nation is that you're slowing down your own economy because now it can't afford to buy as much as it did before. Yes, making yourself poorer is a great way to punish me if you're my customer, I guess.

Uh, yeah. China has several of the world’s top universities. Beida, Tsinghua, Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong, Zhejiang, etc.

The vast majority of Chinese visa students in the US could never get into those schools. Some of the Harvard students won’t get their top pick.

It’s a classic example of the US just assuming they’re better than everyone else.

I forget who said it here but it really does come down to these muppets mistaking American Exceptionalism and not understanding what made them exceptional.

There's a reason that China was never actually catching up to the US despite decades of us being told it was imminent. People are always going to be more creative and productive in a system that promotes it, and the best and brightest from around the world are going to try to get access to that wherever they can if it doesn't exist where they're from.

yep...all the things they hate about America, such as the rule of law, the checks and balances, and immigration are what made it a great place

Trump only cares about his own fortune and settling grievances ...so at least he's consistent in not giving a shit about the above

It's all the tech bros who should know better

he's too dumb to use tariffs effectively, he fundamentally misunderstands how they work
