Special Housing Unit

Where they put people who can't be left in general population for either their own safety (that guy) or the safety of others (it's where they'll send someone after an infraction like kicking the shit out of another inmate, you might get 3-6 months in the SHU for that). It's basically 23 hours in a box, with an hour of personal, segregated yard time per day. A lot of people just can't handle the level of isolation that comes with it.

There are probably more that a few prisoners who would love to say "hello" to an ex cop who raped kids.

Which is exactly why he'll serve his entire sentence in the SHU. The wrinkle here for this guy is that ex cops are usually well liked and protected to a degree by staff. I don't think this guy is going to get that consideration, and might even find himself accidentally in the shower with someone he shouldn't be with.

The american prison system is brutal and inhumane as a general rule, but once in a while you get someone who deserves that as much as any person can deserve it.

Thanks. Lotta special letter combos out there. Actually tried to find it before asking for clarity. Now that I know what these stand for, I recommend testing him for tolerance, and then, if low tolerance, shutting him in. Otherwise, gen pop his ass - literally.
