OT: American Politics

I certainly haven't seen it all that much.

I try and steer clear of the religious talk - partly out of a respect for others and partly because it is a waste of time, but I have no issue stating that this board's anti-religious vibe is equally vehement against all religions. You are suffering from what ails KB. Selective arguing or exaggeration.

It's not an exaggeration.

This board constantly rails on Christianity. A large factor behind it is kb's position on things, but just in general I've long noticed and pointed out this trend.

If KB actually believes the shit he is spewing he is even dumber than I thought.

Everyone else may or may not be intolerant, but the guy telling gays they can't be married because they are gay is intolerant too. People who distort their religion to the point that they are passing laws that discriminate against minorities because of immutable qualities aren't good Christians.

I heard an argument on the radio today. I don't agree or disagree with it, just want to put it forward here.

The person claimed that gay citizens have the same rights as straight ones. All Canadians have the same right to marry a person of the opposite sex as long as they aren't immediate family and a consenting adult. All Canadians also have the same right to NOT marry someone of the opposite sex as long as they aren't immediate family and a consenting adult.

So whats the debate all about? No one group is getting more or less rights than another.

Bristol Palin, yup, BRISTOL PALIN, blasts the President for his coming out in support of same-sex marriage

She wrote on her blog: 'While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads.

'In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage.

'Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.

'In this situation, it was the other way around. I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger, or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox.'

****ing stupid hypocrites.

Thats a disingenuous way to state the rights. Its more like all straight people have the right to get married, and all gay people don't.

But its not correct anyway, because in Canada everyone has the right to marry whoever they want as long as they are consenting adults and aren't immediate family.

The debate started when NC approved Amendment One. What's so confusing about that?

Oh ****. I read that too fast. A person of opposite sex? WTF? Agree with Leafman, that's pretty disingenuous.

How can you think for yourself? Religion teachees you to adhere to all of its beliefs not to choose parts you like and ignore parts you don't.

So this is not my OPINION, it's a fact.

sorry. you don't know what you're talking about here. you have concluded that it's a FACT that you are stupid and can't think for yourself if you happen to be religious. you're an arrogant bigot if that's really what you believe.

Haha - good time to set up a u-haul franchise in the states.....Romney up over Obama in the polls.

Obama will win by a bigger margin this time.

Given the 50/50 split on support, It's a wedge issue that will bring out both the left and right in bigger numbers.

Red States aren't voting for him anyways, gay marriage annoucement or no gay marriage announcement.

Which verse in the Bible do you look to as backing against homosexuality?

Guys lets get off the religion stuff....it really is unpleasant and doesn't help.

It isn't an effective argument against gay-marriage so let's just leave it off the table.

Yeah - these early polls are simple media fodder.

I think it's really hard to separate religion in this sort of debate because I do feel like for those who are against it, religion is the major reason why.

Fair enough, HL. Maybe leave the attacks alone...that may help. (not that I think you were attacking anyone.)

1. go and look back over this thread. please notice that my arguments against gay marriage have more to do with sociological issues than religious issues.

2. please stop trying to suggest that religious people are all zombies who can do nothing unless the bible literally tells them to do it.

3. if you insist on knowing where in the bible it talks about this, i'm no bible scholar, but i'm pretty sure i remember hearing some stuff about "not lying with a man" if you are a man.

Which is the problem, since religion should have absolutely zero bearing on the debate - we're only discussing the civil matter of legal marriage.
