OT: American Politics

By "traditional marriage" i assume we're all referring to "the legal unionof one man of a certain class and color to one virgin woman of the same class and colour, subject to parental approval and negotiation on proper dowry payment, any violation of which by that woman would leave hr desttitute and outcast from society".

Or are we referring to "male of tribe A clubs and drags away female of tribe B, impregnates her, which union is then consecrated by a mutual exchange of blood under the shaman's guidance" ?

I always forget which version of "traditional marriage" was the perfect one that finally ensured the survival of our species.

Haha nice.

women's economic, political, and social rights were converging with men in western society long before the invention of the pill in the 1960s.

Mostly due to concepts of individual rights set out in the Enlightenment, I suspect. But with regards to labour market participation specifically, it was due to the pill. It was a massive, sudden change. The evidence is public information and is overwhelming.

Toronto's Top Cheating Areas:

1. The Beaches
2. Forest Hill
3. High Park
4. Rosedale
5. Etobicoke
6. Downtown
7. North York
8. Midtown
9. Leaside
10. Scarborough

Some of Toronto’s toniest neighbourhoods have issues with fidelity.

According to new data released by AshleyMadison.com, the Toronto-based dating site for people in relationships, the most affair-seekers in the GTA live in the Beaches. It is followed closely by Forest Hill, High Park and Rosedale.

The notorious dating site used around the world by philandering partners and singles seeking marrieds went through its Toronto membership database to seek out trends among users in its own backyard.

“Toronto is a city where who you are is strongly related to where you live. Each neighbourhood has a personality and the people who live there tend to identify strongly with that,” says Noel Biderman, founder and CEO of AshleyMadison.com.

The site, which launched in 2002, has 1.2 million members in Canada, of which 400,000 are in the GTA. It is also anonymous for users. Biderman isn’t concerned about outing his clients; the information provided is just the numbers. The release of the numbers may be a boon for some.

“If anything, what we have found is that infidelity, because it’s so infrequently spoken about, people don’t realize how often it happens,” said Biderman. This information shows that literally hundreds of thousands of people in their own communities are doing the exact same thing, he added.

The data also showed that members in the Beaches have the most children on average; High Park boasts the most female members under 35; Etobicoke has the fewest reported affair partners; and historic Leaside has the most. Scarborough residents report having had the most encounters, while users in Rosedale foster single relationships that go much deeper than their east-end neighbours.

The site used the population of each area based on postal code to figure out what percentage of the neighbourhood are members of the site.

Top 10 cheating neighbourhoods in Toronto:

1. The Beaches — 2.96%

2. Forest Hill — 2.91%

3. High Park — 2.85%

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Heh.

Well-played. BUT IT'S REQUIRED FOR PROCREATION.

Well it is both illegal, and physically impossible, to procreate when not married. So really, straight marriage is therefore 100% necessary for the survival of our species. We could probably just get rid of "the gays"

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

As of 2009, approximately 60% of Canadians believe same sex couples should be allowed to be married. That rate is probably higher now.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I bet it's opposed by a majority in China, Iran, and Indonesia too! We should be taking our direction from the wisdom of theocratic or impoverished Third World states!

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I heard one US commentator on McLaughlin Group trying to explain the polling numbers on gay marriage by saying that people want to appear liberal to pollsters but when it comes down to it, they don't like gay marriage and will vote against it in the ballot box.

I can't believe anyone's actually concerned at all about the ability of humans to continue to produce offspring. Absolutely the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Octomom, 19 Kids and Counting, Jon and Kate Plus 8.

Oh, but don't allow gay marriage. That'll surely put the survival of the species in jeopardy.

when will there be a reality show, "HL loves her 25 kids?"

Marriage, ain't what it use to be.....

Cow
An Indonesian teenager from Bali was forced by village elders to marry a cow after he was caught fornicating it. Ngurah Alit claimed the cow seduced him and "wooed him with flattering compliments." The cow was then drowned in a "cleansing" ritual.[1]

[edit]Horse
In some parts of Celtic Ireland, kings (often called "sacred kings") had to wed the local goddess of the land. A druidess was usually chosen to represent the land goddess as the king's wife, but one king in Donegal married a horse, a representative of their local goddess. [1]
May 1998 – The Jerry Springer Show had an episode titled "I Married a Horse!". The show was ultimately not aired by many stations on the planned date, apparently due to concerns about the acceptability of broadcasting an episode in which a man admitted to a long term emotional and sexual relationship of this kind. The man and his horse later participated in a British documentary on the subject.[2]

[edit]Dog
June 2003 – A nine year old Indian girl of the Santal (or 'Santhal') tribe of Khanyhan, near Calcutta was formally married to a dog, in order to ward off a bad omen. The wedding was attended by more than one hundred guests, who danced to the beating of drums and drank home-made liquor. The girl told Western press, "I have no regret in marrying the dog Bacchan. I am fond of the dog who moves around our locality (translation [sic])" and tribal elders added she was free to remarry a human in future as an adult. [3]

November 2007 – A man in southern India married a female dog in a traditional Hindu ceremony as an attempt to atone for stoning two other dogs to death – an act he believes cursed him. Selvakumar, 33, told the paper he had been suffering since he stoned two dogs to death and hung their bodies from a tree 15 years prior.[4]
February 2009 – An infant boy was married off to his neighbors' dog in eastern India by villagers who said it will stop the groom from being killed by wild animals. The boy will still be able to marry a human bride in the future without filing for divorce. [5]

November 2010 – A young Toowoomba, Queensland man tied the knot with his best friend – a five-year-old labrador.[6]

[edit]Goat
Main article: Sudanese goat marriage incident
February 2006 – A Sudanese man named Charles Tombe caught having sex with a neighbour's goat which was subsequently nicknamed Rose, was ordered by the council of elders to pay the neighbour a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($75) and marry the animal.[7]

[edit]Snake
June 2006 – An Indian woman from Bhubaneswar, Orissa, allegedly "fell in love with a snake" and was married to it at a "traditional Hindu wedding celebrated by 2,000 guests". She claimed that a bond of understanding existed between the two. The woman had previously been ill, and recovered upon offering milk to the snake, at which time she fell in love. She later "converted to the animal-loving vegetarian Vaishnav sect whose local elders gave her permission to marry the cobra." [2]. An investigation by Harper's magazine journalist Mischa Berlinski suggests that the snake may not even exist at all and that the incident may have been stage-managed as part of a local power struggle between Vaishnav religious leaders.
