OT: American Politics

The right wing hegemony in the US decided it was a part of the trade off for maintaining the 2nd amendment.

I disagree strongly but I don’t have a say
The media acquiescence to the fact that attention spans are short is also a problem

The media acquiescence to the fact that attention spans are short is also a problem

there are enough long form documentaries, 30 min shows, and two minute segments (not to mention billions of web pages) on the topic

Actually the mainstream media always pixilates or blurs the gory stuff. The only way to really see what's happening in the Ukraine is to watch social media for unfiltered footage.

And yes, those visceral images are what turned public opinion against the war in Vietnam which is why the US military made sure in future wars (like the Gulf War) that journalists were "embedded" so that their film footage could be vetted and so that the journalists themselves could be on a shorter leash.

Most network news affiliates have standing policies regarding the showing of graphic images. A lot of these local stations are owned by far right assholes (remember that crap that Sinclair Broadcast Group made all of their on-air talent at all their stations parrot about media bias and "fairness" when Trump was at his worst?) You aren't going to see images of dead kids because the people who own these local stations won't allow it. It goes against their chosen narrative.

I did my yearly, company-mandated active shooter training just last week. The procedure is to first try to flee the building. If that isn't an option the next thing to do is hide. If all else fails, you're instructed to fight like your life depends on it because it does.

I don't recall this type of employee training prior to a couple of years ago and certainly it was not something we ever discussed when I was in elementary school or high school.
