OT: American Politics

the correct ending to the original sentence is "are fucked"
Defeats what military?

Canada isn't the Ukraine. If we get invaded we ain't bothering to try and fight back. It's just going to be what it is. The history of the world is one in which nations which are unable to defend and hold on to their territories get pushed off them by bigger, stronger nations (see Native Americans) We've only lasted this long due to a combination of luck and the construct of international laws. As soon as a fascist United States stops observing those laws, we are all fucked. It's just math. Canada doesn't have a huge army because there's no point in having a huge army. It would never be huge enough to keep an invader out. We rely on the kindness of strangers. Always have.

We also don't have near as many guns in the hands of civilians as it would take to make their confiscation actually matter. If every Canadian who currently owns guns rose up as one in an attempt to overthrow the government the insurrection would me measured in hours, not days, weeks or months. There just aren't that many gun owners here, probably because of the time and expense involved in acquiring them.

agree on the first part.

in terms of how many guns there are here, I think you'd be surprised. if the US is our reference point, sure, we have zero guns. but compared to most other countries, we actually have quite a bit.
