OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I told you, and showed you, that they are still after the F35s.

No you didn't. You posted an unsourced link to an unnamed public works official making mention of that. As far as the rest of us are aware, there is to be an open bidding process the next time.

The fact that they cancelled the previous contract in the first place and have been informed by several noted defence critics on the limitations of the aircraft's specs should be enough for any rational individual to conclude that perhaps they are having second thoughts. Otherwise they would have simply accepted the criticism and went through with the purchase to begin with.

Whatever you said after that post is irrelevant to your telling me to stop complaining that they're still after the F35s.

I didn't make mention of the F-35s. I said that they need new jets.

You don't even believe they're still after them, despite me posting the proof more than once in this thread.

I believe that they're after a new aircraft yes, and that several options are on the table, including the F-35. None of that means that they are definitively going to purchase the F-35, which is what you seem to believe.

You think the F35s are dead

No, I think the previous purchase was dead and that there will be a new bidding process. That may or may not result in the F-35 being the winning bid. As previously stated, I would prefer the Rafale or the Typhoon to be the winning aircraft.

and believe an open and transparent bidding process is ongoing

I never once claimed it was ongoing. I said that there will be one. That infers future tense, not present tense.

when it's clear that they are waiting until the summer of next year to decide on jets we can't use.

Which is my point. Calm down and stop foaming at the mouth until there actually is a decision reached. If they end up selecting the turkey I'll be with you in voicing my displeasure at the purchase.

As much as you say you agree with me that they should choose something else, you're not acknowledging that they're not even interested in anything else. Ever since his first election win, it's been F35s or bust. That's the fact.

That's not the fact. They had a preferred aircraft in the past, but ever since some of the operational costs have soared far beyond projected estimates they have considerably soured on the option.

I've never once defended Ontario's Liberals over the gas plant scandal. Not once.

You don't appear to be as worked up about that compared to significantly less important things like minute Senate expenses that were repaid. One could be forgiven for thinking your priorities lay elsewhere.

Many times actually - even doing some creative math to make it seem 100x less serious.

Ever going to explain what you meant that day? Or did you just want to admit you can't count and get it over with.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I love the double standard.
The Senate Scandals; lost 911 funding; F35s... no big deal.
But saving 30 salaries @ about 50 or 60G each - well worth it.
What?

The two aren't related. If the government has determined that offices of a particular department can be shut down then I hope they do it - veterans affairs, health canada...anything.

We've been through the Senate scandal issue as well. Reform it - limit it. Pretty simple.

But you really need to stop with the $3.2b "911" fund. Like really, it's hyper dishonest and it's as if you ignore the fact that it spanned two governments, most of it falling under Federal Liberal watch. Pinning that on Harper is one of the most odd things one could do.

Oh, this is why there is so much interest in council today.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Councillor Jaye Robinson is reading an open letter to Ford now.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Robinson: "...seemingly endless cycle of allegations, denials, and belated admissions..."

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Robinson: "Together we stand to ask you to step aside and take a leave of absence." Ford is staring straight ahead.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Robinson: The office of the mayor "demands nothing less than honesty," transparency and accountability.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Dramatic moment: Robinson is reading the names of the councillors who have signed letter. They're standing one by one.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
...Thompson, Fletcher, Fragedakis, Moeser, Minnan-Wong, Pasternak, Del Grande, Wong-Tam, Mihevc...

Daniel Dale @ddale8
...Parker, Lee, Crawford, Cho, McConnell, Robinson...

Jamie Strashin @StrashinCBC
Cllr Robinson delivers petition from residents asking Mayor Ford to take leave. This petition signed by councillors who are now standing.'

Elizabeth Church @lizchurchto
Councillors now standing as Cllr Robinson reads out their names. An early piece of drama in day. #topoli

Rachel Mendleson @rachelmendleson
Here we go: Robinson is reading letter. Asking councillors who signed to stand #RobFord

Marcus Gee @marcusbgee
Councillors are standing one by one to support Ford motion. This is a grave moment. Cheers erupted after motion read.

Jamie Strashin @StrashinCBC
Seems Robinson's petition has been signed by a wide majority of cllrs. Vote to receive petition 41-2. Mayor votes against.

Daniel Dale @ddale8
I've been told that the joint letter would be the day's big action. The actual debate on Minnan-Wong's motion may be a non-thing.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

City council - such a boring group of do-nothings in every city.

Do nothings? They're responsible for most of the government services that you actually use. Boring, sure, because the details are always less exciting than the big picture.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Minnan-Wong: I was approaching the speaker, Ford "physically" impeded me "in a threatening way."

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Minnan-Wong: Ford dealt with me "in a way I have never experienced in my time on council."

Jamie Strashin @StrashinCBC
Cllr DMW stands on point of privelge. Says Mayor "blocked his path in a threatening way".

@BenSpurr: Here's Ford and Minnan-Wong on the floor, with Cllr Davis trying to intervene pic.twitter.com/uIL5y21lYw

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Minnan-Wong asks Ford to apologize. Doug Ford rises to yellingly say he'll apologize. Lots of yelling from the gallery: "SIT DOWNNN!"

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Doug Ford: "Bring it on!" "Lookin' forward to the election!" Nunziata calls a five-minute recess. Doug Ford causes many recesses.
