For sure. That’s partly what I had in mind when it comes to homosexuality effectively being outlawed.

Making homosexuality explicitly illegal is the end goal, but along the way there they’ll take a page out of Nixon’s playbook. Since Nixon couldn’t make it illegal to be black or anti-war, he instead engineered drug laws, a drug war and heavy mandatory minimum sentences that were laser-targeted at the civil rights & anti-war communities.

So, the modern equivalent for the gays will be crafting laws that target them specifically without specifically naming them, like the old “anti-buggery” or “anti-sodomy” laws that used to be on the books. Hell, they’ll probably bring back laws against oral sex too (which are hilariously still on the books in some US States).

Life was not good for the average Iranian. By the 70's the country had a 40% literacy rate and one of the worst infant mortality rates in the middle east. The Islamic Revolution occurred because Pahlavi spent 20+ years pouring money into his own and the pockets of well connected people in his court, at the expense of everyone else. That some of the wealth dribbled down to create a class of salaried civil servants isn't some amazing feat of social engineering.

It's super awesome that your family benefitted from this is some way or another, but their experience simply isn't indicative of the average Iranian's experience. If you give a fuck about actually connecting with the history here, which you appear to care so much about, just read everything Abrahamian has written on the subject, he's the iranian history goat from the constitutional revolution onward.

I'm supposed to believe that a thin skinned baby like you is somehow a lawyer? Put on your big boy pants and recognize that when you are on an internet message board you are "in the arena". You can't run out of bounds to avoid contact. You have to tighten your chin strap and ENGAGE.

Your takes on the Shah were abysmal and you were taken out to the metaphorical woodshed for it. But in actual fact it was you who beclowned yourself. So just take the L in stride like a man and stop acting like a such a pussy for once. Bad take or not you are loved and among friends (or at least friends and frienemies) Have yourself a grilled chicken sandwich and relax.
