OT: American Politics

Judging by that map, Canada is the primary trading partner of over 30 of the 50 states, many of which are red states. You want to get their attention you make them feel the pain.

Why stop at dollar for dollar? Make it 2 bucks for every dollar. Fuck em. Start talking to the EU.

Canadian governments have been trying to diversify trade for decades. But it's always seemed like "gee, we really should try to diversify our trading partners a bit."

Not making it a top priority since the last time Dorito pulled this shit 8 years ago is an unbelievable failure.

Trudeau is shit

But - we’ve got an ocean to deal with and the only country we share a border with Ianthe wealthiest most sophisticated country ever.

Our next best options are central/south am, but that flows through the US, Russia and China.

Ya definitely tough to not just lean into and rely on the U.S. when you can just ship stuff my truck over the border. I get that it's easy to criticize in hindsight, but 2016 was a warning shot. We should expect our government to be be proactive on this stuff and limit our risk.

And the logistics of diversifying seem difficult for sure, we're going to need to invest in infrastructure to increase trade with Europe or the Asian pacific rim. Which is why we should have started 8 years ago, or preferably earlier.

Oceans and land borders...meh...have to bite the bullet and do it.

Here's how Australia's exports look. Similar resource based economy. They're not exactly neighbours with these countries (as far as I can tell, that 22% unspecified consists primarily of 9%ish india and 8%ish U.S.A).

In fairness it’s very hard to diversify away from the US. Supply chains are highly integrated, it’s land based, a huge population and it is very, very rich. We not in the same position as Australia.

The reality is that most other countries would kill to have that access.
