OT: American Politics

People like you filled stadiums for years to see Carrot Top.
I remember when I first noticed that Las Vegas had jumped the shark and was no longer "Oceans 11, Casino, Swingers, Smoking Aces" cool but was now basically just a family-friendly, Disney theme park with slot machines. It was when I was walking through the terminal at McCarron and, while waiting at the baggage carousel, saw a huge sign advertising the Las Vegas residency of Carrot Top. Not "one night only" or even a week. Nope. Every. Single. Day. Of. Every. Single. Week.

If he was a comedian some of his shit might be funny, maybe.

He's not a comedian though, he's in a position of signifigant power and I doubt the bullshit he spews draws much laughter to those it affects.

I don't find anything funny about anything he does or says.
This is fair. I agree, it's unfortunate that he has all this power. But the man has great comedic instincts. Always has.

How was his show?

The man famously has no sense of humour. Most jokes are just veiled insults. I don't know where you're getting this from. Sure he is occasionally funny, but "great" "comedic" "instincts"... I don't think so, Tim.
Charismatic and funny with an innate ability to appeal to many different groups of people. We can hate him, but to pretend he isn't an absolute rockstar is disingenuous at this point.

He basically has two things he does

- Claims to have invented a word, or popularized an old word that no one uses anymore, etc. But in a deeply literal way, which just isn't funny. It's almost as if someone was apeing Monty Pythonesque absurdity without understanding what makes Monty Python funny. At best the humour is deeply unintentional. It's absurdist without him knowing that it's absurdist.

- He renames people and things, usually with an ugly undertone of racism or anger. Easily, easily his best was calling covid the Kung Flu, which was funny if you've got a dark enough sense of humour to overlook the thing about 1000's of people per day dying from it at the time. Which I do, so full marks there. But usually this manifests in obvious school yard bully punching downward type shit that just isn't funny. Crooked this, lyin that, crazy this, etc.

he is a walking monty python sketch about dimwitted upper class twits

It looks more like the bigliest and best grift in history.

Stealing one from Scott Galloway: the government is being run by Fredo Corleone. The grift is Michael. Probably by design. (The last part is my take…)

This.

When it's done unironically (and there's barely a MAGA Republican alive right now who "gets" irony or satire, let alone humor) it's not funny, it's cringey.

I do believe we’ll look back at this era of politics in a pretty dark way eventually. It may take quite a while but to eventually hear people look back at Trumpers in a similar vein as Nazi supporters wouldn’t surprise me. So I think I’d prefer not to be on some archived internet sites as having ever called him a rockstar with impeccable comedic timing or any other glowing shit.

I guess the alternative theory is that he became president and developed a very sizable loyal following because of his great political views and policies. I tend to lean towards rockstar, personally. His political work is obviously garbage and much of it goes contrary to traditional conservatism.

Or he's a symptom of a deeply broken culture, an empire on the edge of deep, irretrievable decline. He's only considered popular and funny and all of that other bullshit you're talking about among one subset of the population of one country on the planet. He's laughed at by far, far more than he's laughed with.
