OT: American Politics

Or he's a symptom of a deeply broken culture, an empire on the edge of deep, irretrievable decline. He's only considered popular and funny and all of that other bullshit you're talking about among one subset of the population of one country on the planet. He's laughed at by far, far more than he's laughed with.
Listen, I'm just observing what I'm seeing. He's no Ross Atkins. And to discount what he has done would be foolish. We can hate the man and everything about what he stands for and also take a step back to observe the movement that he has spearheaded across the world at the same time. It's powerful stuff.

There’s not one reason for his popularity but a big one is that he offers simple 5 word solutions to almost every problem that other politicians have taken seriously on both sides of the aisle

Employment, purchasing power, immigration, health care, and geo political strife are pretty much evergreen problems but Trump is the first one who addressed them like a 9 yr old talking to a class filled with enough voters who think like 8 yr olds

I guess the alternative theory is that he became president and developed a very sizable loyal following because of his great political views and policies. I tend to lean towards rockstar, personally. His political work is obviously garbage and much of it goes contrary to traditional conservatism.
You may be confusing "charisma" - which he does have ... with "funny", which he does not.

Obviously he appealed to a lot of shitty people early on by basically saying, fuck the dogwhistles ... let's just say it out loud! Bannon and Miller et al figured out this was a message that would resonate with a lot of people. And they were right. Political correctness annoyed a lot of people, and in certain instances definitely went too far.

Now how this led to him being a modern-day Jim Jones, I have no fucking idea. All that Hannibal Lecter shit has more to do with dementia than Andrew Dice Clay, though.

No no, I do definitely think he's very funny to a very large percentage of the world. Myself included. It's a shame that the funniest man alive has to be evil.

Oh, I'm not arguing against the fact that he appeals to certain people. I will however argue against the assertion that what appeals to those people is his humour, charm, etc. He's given a certain subset of Americans permission to give in to their worst impulses. That's the appeal. Whatever he has that counts for a sense of humour is about being hurtful towards the people his fans want him to hurt.

He developed an enormous fanbase on programs like the stern show for being a rich dude that talks like your buddy at a bar. Cracking jokes, being offensive, etc. He was famous for quite literally no other reason. He was just a dime a dozen rich dude. But a unicorn personality that people couldn't get enough of. And now he's talking the same way as the president. That's funny to a lot of people. I know that may be hard to handle, but people find him hilarious.

I mean, you're aware that something around 95%+ of the planet has never heard or watched the Howard Stern show in their lives, right?

He does have comedic instincts and for a while (back in 2016-18) he worked the room like a fresh insult comic.

His material has gone incredibly stale. He doesn’t get the same amount of laughs and like you said, all he’s got now are insults and hype, like a WWE wrestler about to retire

Is the argument here that he wasn't famous? I gave one example of a show (one where people with the same personalities migrated to the Rogan show). But he was known for being a rich dude with a contagious personality. That's it. You need to be charismatic as fuck to accomplish that. You need to seperate yourself from your political affiliation here and acknowledge what he has accomplished without much of an actual skillset.

I do believe we’ll look back at this era of politics in a pretty dark way eventually. It may take quite a while but to eventually hear people look back at Trumpers in a similar vein as Nazi supporters wouldn’t surprise me. So I think I’d prefer not to be on some archived internet sites as having ever called him a rockstar with impeccable comedic timing or any other glowing shit.
We may not get the chance to look back if Trump's ultimate dream is ever realized.

So THAT'S where Poilievre went wrong!

It was supposed to be FIVE word slogans, not THREE!

If he had used "Axe The Woke Liberal Tax" instead of just "Axe The Tax" he'd be sitting pretty right now.

I'm not disputing that, I'm disputing the why. You're chalking it up to generally positive attributes like charisma and a comedians level sense of humour, I'm attributing it to far, far darker personality traits. Racism, authoritarianism, etc.

His defining features are all the deeply negative ones, and he stumbles into a Kung Flu once in a while. His fans love him for the hate, not the comedy.
