I think I’m in the camp that democracy in the US has already ended. Long time in the making, but confirmed when there were no consequences for the people that planned and organized Jan 6th, and driven home when the chief architect was reelected President. Republicans have been actively trying to tear down the system for a long time, and Dems could not meet the moment.

They’re not getting it back through incremental, common-sense, non-violent changes either. The only way back is revolution. But when the authoritarians control the military (militias are on their side too) and the majority of the press, there’s no real path back. Does anyone doubt that if Trump ordered mass detentions of democrats tomorrow, Fox and co. would spin it as a necessary step to taking the country back?

Reminds me that the 36th anniversary of Tiananmen Square just passed. Since then, the authoritarian government has massively tightened its grip. The pro-democracy movement in China is a distant memory, written out of history. That’s probably where the US will be in 40 years.

I’m sure there’ll be folks that say this is hyperbole but I agree with all of this. We’re already there.
