OT: American Politics

I'm all for taxing the uber rich to pay for child care, public transport, infrastructure, etc but private grocery stores make no sense to me....

why would anyone want to run a private grocery store in competition with a government entity that does not worry about turning a profit, or innovating, or offering new products, etc etc

The issue is that there are legit food deserts in New York (mostly in poor neighbourhoods), that grocery operators already ignore and the idea is to put city owned stores in those. I have no qualms with them. We have to get beyond this societal stupidity of expecting private enterprise to be the solution to problems caused by the nature of private enterprise.

"A Canadian citizen and U.S. permanent resident has died while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Florida and awaiting removal from the United States, the agency says."

I get that food deserts are a problem but I thought it was already being dealt with at the state level in conjunction with the private sector

10 million doesn't sound like a lot...I mean, the lease cost alone on a single grocery store sized space in NYC is probably in the 150-200K range.

Shit, reading the press release, there are 9 programs that got funding and the 10 millie is adding:

- a 2100 sq ft mini grocer in Mid Hudson
- a 22,000 sq ft facility in Syracuse
- a 10,000 sq ft grocer in Brooklyn
- A "veggie van" project serving the university of Buffalo area
- a curbside market in Finger Lakes
- A medium sized grocer in Schenectady
- A 3500 sq ft grocer in Buffalo
- A new kitchen for the Mobile Market Bus in Southern Tier
- A processing kitchen and small market in North County

There's the 10 millie mate. 9 projects, one of which in the NYC area.

ICE noted Noviello had been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. since 1991, after entering the country through legal visa status in 1988. However, it also said he was facing removal for being convicted of drug charges “as a non-immigrant overstay.”

He was convicted of drug trafficking and other charges in Volusia County, Florida, in 2023 and sentenced to 12 months in prison, ICE said.

In May of this year, Noviello was arrested by ICE at the Florida Department of Corrections probation office and charged with removability due to his earlier conviction.
