OT: American Politics

Annoying seeing all these countries placating this asshole. I guess they're just being pragmatic. But much of the US will see this as "winning".

The United States and European Union have reached a trade deal, ending a months-long standoff between two of the world's key economic partners.

After make-or-break negotiations between President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen in Scotland, the pair agreed on a blanket US tariff on all EU goods of 15%. That is half the 30% import tax rate Trump had threatened to implement starting on Friday.

Trump said the 27-member bloc would open its markets to US exporters with zero per cent tariffs on certain products.

Von der Leyen also hailed the deal, saying it would bring stability for both allies, who together account for almost a third of global trade.

So… the entire raison d’être of MAGA is gonzo.

All righty then.

The publicly spoken reason for being....yeah

It was always a white nationalist movement at it's heart. It sought meaning in other things to help broaden it's tent, but it's super instructive that "throw out the brown people" (after your punish them, of course) is it's 200 billion dollar core piece of government policy.

Until he calls it the worst deal ever, the Europeans are very nasty people, deal is off, etc within the next 6 months.

Rest assured, nobody is caving.

Devil is in the details, and these “deals” are all going to hurt the US more than they hurt their trading partners (still net loss all around because Dotard is a fool and the US is over.)

Oh I agree totally, I just don't like the optics. Would rather the world united and played more hard ball
I agree there. Shouldn’t be any question whether multilateralism is good, just because the US is done with it.

Other countries are hedging their bets. Taking advantage of a stupid US administration in the short term (without doing anything blatant enough for Dotard and the US media to know they’re not actually WiNiNg), and meanwhile hoping the US has a path back to sanity and leadership. I don’t see it.

Amy Sherald Cancels Smithsonian Exhibition over Censorship Concerns

American Sublime” features some 50 works by Sherald, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive presentations of her work yet. The show was originally organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and subsequently traveled to the Whitney Museum, where it is on view through August 10. The iteration set for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery would have marked the first solo presentation of its kind by a Black contemporary artist at the institution.

pretty interesting comment:
