OT: American Politics

Tim Apple is just doing what any responsible CEO would do when there’s a lot on the line, a President who wants to be bribed, and no social consequences for corruption. He’d be ousted if he tried to take a stand.

It would take collective action to stop this grift train and that’s obviously not happening.

yeah...I'm not hating the player...Trump is the asshole who set the rules of this banana republic game

This is the problem with state corruption, everything else warps and corrupts around it. Timmy wouldn't be doing his job if he won't play the game. You can only hold out and claim that you're protecting the brand by avoiding the appearance of corruption for so long.

Maybe the only enjoyable part about this entire circus is watching these fucking amateurs get worked by Donnie. They're so used to the other side playing the game according to a rulebook that when someone comes along willing to grift, lie, cheat, etc his way to whatever he wants, they have no fucking clue how to deal with him other than pretend to resist, roll over hoping to not get worked, get worked, cry, move on to the next issue.

it’s the only way it works — the know Trump has broken all the norms but somehow individuals delude themselves they won’t get fooled personally.

It’s like watching a person of average intelligence “figure out” they have a special skill at 3 Card Monte.

Their power and livelihoods depend on it. In any political system, but especially a chaotic fuckshow autocracy, your value as a politician is in your ability to extract value from the centre of power. Trump not being consistent, in any way at all, will just make them debase themselves more and deeper to please and serve him. It's the only way to increase your chances of accessing power, appearing powerful yourself, etc.

I hope he doesn’t stiff Kim

From WSJ
>President Trump is considering reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, according to people familiar with the matter, after pot companies have poured millions of dollars into Trump’s political groups.

At a $1 million-a-plate fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club earlier this month, Trump told attendees that he was interested in change, the people, who declined to be named, said. Such a shift, which the Biden administration started pursuing but didn’t enact before leaving office, would make it much easier to buy and sell pot and make the multibillion-dollar industry more profitable.

The guests at Trump’s fundraiser included Kim Rivers, the chief executive of one of the largest marijuana companies, Trulieve, who encouraged Trump to pursue the change and expand medical marijuana research, according to people present at the event.

There's more, it's excellent, shut up and read it.

Theory from some folks who would have an inside track: the admin is using tariffs effectively as a VAT. It makes some sense - a VAT is a nonstarter, so couching your VAT as a tariff creates subterfuge that can be accepted and it effectively achieved the same thing.

My counterpoint: trump isn’t that smart or calculating, plus a VAT would be in the 3-7% range and have exceptions, not the 30, 40 50 % the orange idiot is throwing out there.

Dude, "Trump isn't that smart." 'Nough said.

Sets and changes the rules based on feelings and an infant level understanding of economics.

It’s not surprising but also sad to witness the world’s biggest companies making board room decisions that they have less to lose from their CEO bribing POTUS on caméra than the do from taking a principled stand.
