OT: Cars

I was originally planning a sideways move to another A4, but test drove this puppy and couldn't think of anything else afterward. It was very tough finding one with a manual transmission though ... had to hunt the ****er down.

Yeah, a manual is a must.

How do you find the power in them? I'm a little concerned that for what it is, and it's curb weight that it's under powered, just from looking at the specs.

Is it ok to admit I have this? :couch
No shame. They're reliable and get stupid great fuel mileage. They're just boring, but if that isn't a priority who cares? You can be bored at half the ownership cost of a comparably sized 'fun' car and save gas for the rest of us.

They're pretty much like your g35 when you mat it. Sound is meh, but pretty quick.

The only issue is that many competitors are in near-supercar territory and sound like something from 1960s LeMans.

That's my major qualm with the A5 (and by extension the S5) is that on specs alone, they seem to be underpowered compared to the other things in their price range. S5 and a C63 are comparable for price point, but one is throwing down 460 horse and sounds like a serial killer with a well tuned chainsaw is coming after you, the other is a S5.

Actually John, I've got a question for you. What's your opinion on the supercharged (and naturally aspirated) Jag XF's. I was looking at 2011-2012's last time I was home. I saw one in Niagara on the Lake of all places done up with a rear diffuser, subtle but nice body kit and blacked out (matte black paint) and it looked sick. Got me thinking about them.

I agree. The saving grace of the s5 is the awd. You get to put down all that power from 0kmh. Not so with the c63. But that matters little once you're at highway speeds. And the supercharged v6 isn't bad sounding. Its just up against tgamg and jaguar v8s so good luck Audi.

Reliability aside, as I don't really do repair work on them much and can only say 'people say they're doing better', I'd take an xf or xfr(supercharged) over any competitor. That interior just has flair and little touches the Germans wouldn't dare try. The xfr-s is awesome, but a bit much visually and in terms of ride/handling trade off.

I have always been surprised by the power of the four banger they use. I have its first generation in my A4 and lack of power was never an issue. I'm not one to gun from the line, but I travel a lot of two lane highways and pass a lot. The current one has 20 more hp than my first gen. On the test drive, it was noticeable.

Cool, thanks man. As I mentioned to John, it's the one point of concern I have. They just come off as under powered compared to their competitors, which bugs me mainly because the fit and finish is so similar between the German brands. Now that Jag makes a quality competitor as well (John nails it, dat interior), it gets harder and harder for me every time I look at the Audi's the justify the price point.

Cool, thanks man. I've been holding off on this decision for a while (the G35 has held up better than I expected), and I'm torn between a bunch of stuff in that range (that we've discussed before, so I'll spare you doing it again)

I looked at other brands before doing this and couldn't find anything I liked as much. Powers isn't a big deal for me. As long as I can pass efficiently on the highway, I'm good. The car is just beautiful. There's always the 450 hp RS5 if you really need the power (and don't mind dropping the coin).

Yeah, Walter Da Silva considers it the most beautiful car he's ever designed (and he's probably not wrong). Completely gorgeous rig. I really need to test drive the lot of them though, maybe the handling and feel will win out over the bigger power plants.

I'm biased toward Audi, but just love the ride of this car. I tested the S5 as well. More power than I need, but I came close to biting on it (it's not that much pricier than the A5). For me, it was just an issue of whether the added power was worth filling up more often.

True..not to mention the Prius V is huge inside. Miles of leg and headroom in the front and back. It is gutless though.

Was interested in a Tesla S. Actually semi in love with them, right up until I saw the sticker price on a fully decked out one. You're up into the 125K+ range for one...

You can get it cheaper, down into the 60-70K range but you're not really getting a whole lot aside from never paying for gas again.

It may be vanity, but I have a rule about stuff like that. If there's a chance people will have to ask, never buy the slower model. An a5 is well-badged so those questions won't happen. But a Tesla? Anyone who knows will ask if they haven't seen the badge on the back, and you'll spend your life going "no, not the 85kwh one" and disappointing people. Plus it generally helps resale, especially with a car that has collector potential.

The Tesla, in general, is super tempting. But if you drive more than 100km in a day and don't have money for a decent second car, I'd wait. Tesla CLAIMS they've got a <5 minute battery swap process sussed out, but I don't think it'll ever be available on the current gen Model S.

Once the battery swap becomes doable, and they get at least enough infrastructure to get you swapped out heading to cottage country, Ottawa, and the border, all bets are off and electric cars become viable. As much as I love big, snorty, old school V8's, I can't wait.

By the way, ME ... you should check in with Queensway Audi. They are excellent in terms of sales dealing and service. As the sales guy said to me way back, all you need to worry about if refilling the gas and washer fluid ... and it was true.

I should also note that I have had no issues with the reliability of my Audi. It still runs like a gem and has no rust anywhere on it.

I'll keep that in mind man, thanks. That's a far ass way for me to go for oil changes though.

Oh, it's not getting bought unless I can afford the 133,000 dollar one I built on their website. I want all the ****ing toys on something like that.
