OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

I can understand the need to know, but this is all rampant speculation at this point, and it can be unhealthy IMO to make these kinds of guesses.

I just got an email that a guy I had dinner with (along with a few others) at my conference in New Orleans has COVID. Yikes.

Death rates are well documented...some one can easily compare these numbers to see the uptick.

Yeah, that's my thought. You can cover this number up (either intentionally or through lack of capacity to test the dead) for a while but when researchers start seeing crazy upticks in deaths caused by a whole bunch of different issues, in the end they'll all be considered to be at least loosely connected to covid.

haven't seen anyone do that comprehensively yet, but I have seen specific rates in specific areas and those comps are ugly.
You're the data man. Instead of a daily "Real Standings" update. How about a relative death increase daily update?

Yeah, this is a problem. So many data nerds lacking the diligence and appreciation for statistical processes.

My favourite passage from the article:

This isn’t to pick on Stanway (although, like many others, he should take down his misleading post), but to point out a larger problem with coronavirus data vigilantes: They don’t know what they don’t know. They are oddly comfortable marshalling irrelevant credentials to make sweeping predictions that muddy the waters at a profoundly critical time. As one Twitter user quipped, “Coronavirus can cause a hacking cough. As a software engineer, I know a thing or two about hacking. In this Medium post I will be.”

Heh, I saw that reply "Coronovirus came from bats and as a baseball player, I know a thing or two about bats..."

My guess is the number of asymptomatic carriers is at least as much as symptomatic if not more.
