OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

I'm sorry what?

Getting better for sure. Just the residual cough, snotty, "I don't sleep because I keep coughing but I'm always fucking tired and angry so I'll make your life miserable" phase. You know how it is. The fever, while high, was fine and manageable. He's had a fever as high as 105 in the past and seemed way worse and less lucid at that time... It was the breathing bit that had as worried. It was a real struggle, but the steroids had an immediate impact and the following day his fever broke entirely.

Mrs. Preston has taken the first hit since. She has been a bit of a mess today and yesterday, but so far no fever. Hope she escapes that at least. I assume I'll be next, unless I've got better immunity to whatever the fuck this is. Doesn't seem too nasty for her though in any event... (Yet).

As much as we've probably escaped the worst of having a child and him constantly being sick... He's still somehow constantly fucking sick. Even without going too many places. Crazy how shit their immune systems are and how vulnerable they are to everything. That's why I don't necessarily buy the "covid is the most transmissible virus ever" bit. We just have way better population immunity to everything else. Hard to know how transmissible the other viruses really are.
My daughter was sick every other day from 0 to 4. Now she is a tank. It's a struggle, those first few years. Mix in a novel virus to worry about and it's just no bueno.

Mrs. Preston's words at the hospital waiting for hours in a crammed waiting room: "if he doesn't have covid we're sure to get it now."

She has been symptomatic which what I assumed was what my kid had. My son was unusually exhausted this morning, took a nap, and woke up with a fever (first fever since Wednesday night). We may be getting back to back good times here.
This is turning out to be a bit of a cunt of a situation

what's up now dr presto?
He has had a lowgrade fever on and off since yesterday with a renewed, stronger, cough with loads of postnasal drip. Almost zero energy as well, can barely keep his eyes open (sounds covidy to me). Right after I posted that his fever broke and his energy semi returned though. So yay? For now? Whatever hit him last week seemed to be more severe assuming this is the end of phase 2 but there are a lot of twists and fucking turns so I'll never count anything out.

Edit: nvm false alarm fever is back!

My money is on him catching another virus (maybe covid) at the hospital. Mrs. Preston had an n95 on and he has his own n95 but it's not a very tight fit since it's not designed for 2 year olds. Mrs. Presto feels like absolute shit and has been testing negative for covid so she may be getting hit with back to back viruses this week if mini presto has the vid. I maybe escaped the original virus? For now? Either way I'm a sitting duck for something soon enough. I feel okay I think for now.

Tldr: don't have kids

Did they test for RSV? It’s been making the rounds and acts A LOT like Covid. We had it four years back (kiddo and I). He was hospitalized for a week. Lost my smell and taste. Felt like a tank ran over me. German, not Russian. I hope he’s on the mend soon it’s awful seeing the littles struggle.

Yeah for the original virus last week he was tested for all of the common ones, including RSV. That was my thought as well, but negative. It's actually quite a bit more severe for kids than covid so I'm glad you guys made it out alright in the end.

For this weird rebound... Who knows. He's not in distress or anything (yet) so we're just letting it run its course for now. Lowgrade fever on and off and crazy fatigue with the cough and snotty bit still ongoing. Surprised it hasn't escalated yet, nor has it improved. Second day like this after being on the mend and fever-free since Thursday.... No idea.

TLDR: at 6 months breakthrough infections resulted in:

1.3% excess deaths (in addition to the deaths in the first 30 days), 12% long covid

This is only a 34% lower death rate compared to unvaxxed and just 15% lower long covid rate.

Also BA.2 is more severe. Backed up by lab data and now real world info:

Has a higher incidence of long covid than BA.1 too in preliminary data.

damn. pretty sure Ms. Wayward and I have had both BA.1 and BA.2.

confirmed positive test during the time BA.2 was dominant. suspected case when it was BA.1...

also, when(/if) should I be getting reboosted?

4th dose? Currently no evidence to support benefit for most younger immunocompetent folks; I don't think any country or province has recommended yet and probably never will? Omicron specific jabs should be out by the fall. How well will they work on the variant in circulation at the time? At the moment it's looking like it'll be BA.4/BA.5 in the next month or 2 and there is a LOT of immune evasion there. Not sure how much benefit there will be, but if you were already infected maybe it won't be horrible. And it certainly beats the OG vax.

Intranasal vaccines really should have been expedited. It's such a shame.

2035 if lucky. I don't know really. Seems like every day very preliminary lab data on animal testing is released and it's out of this world. But I rarely hear much about human testing. This shit moves SOOOOOO slowly when things aren't operation warp sped up. Good job by Trump there.

Another problem is other intranasal vaccines have been linked to safety concerns so who knows if they'll be safe on humans, if they'll get the dosage right, etc.

He just TLDR'd me. Or did I TLDR him? Either way, nice.

@Preston how’s the fam today?
First day since Sunday for the kid without a lowgrade fever. His energy seems good, but still the really bad cough and congestion.

My money is on him having covid tbh. I think he got hit with double viruses over the past week. The fatigue was so so bad for a couple of days there and I don't know of any other reason his fever would return after 3 days without one and seemingly on the road to recovery? And to have the fever continue for 3 days after that? And the symptoms conveniently came 3.5 days after he was at the crowded hospital; which is the average incubation period.

Anyway Mrs. Preston is still negative, feels like crap, but has improved today slightly. She's been battling the original illness that my son had since last Friday-ish. So she didn't catch covid at the hospital but... I feel it's just a countdown for us to catch it from my son; I'm expecting to get hit tomorrow or Friday. If neither of us do then I'll be really confused. I'm still completely symptom free for now.
